Opportunity to point and laugh at the newbie...

...and a place for me to get the 10 posts I need for the parts-subforum

Allow me to share the sad tale of my Tuesday:

I woke up this morning, feeling inspired & with my hands itching to do something constructive. My E39's headlights had long looked rather dim, what with 10 years' worth of sun & pitting & whatnot. To add to my woes, it had become evident that at least 1 adjustment screw on each headlight had broken at some point. This had both lights pitching down to such an extent that they were quite effective at illuminating Jo'burg potholes 5 seconds too late, but not much else, so the car painted a rather sorry picture at night

So, with a spring in my step I proceeded to yank both headlights & merrily started stripping them into their constituent parts. I could already picture the vast improvement I was going to have, for nothing more than a bit of elbow grease, as the insides had really become quite filthy. One couldn't even see through the projector lenses!

All went well. The front lenses were scrubbed inside and out. The half-round gems of glass were polished to a fine sheen. Heck, even the various connectors were positively glistening. All that was left to do was to give the 4 reflectors a rubdown.

And so we come to the lesson of today's story: Mr Muscle Surface cleaner is not to be used on silverised plastic reflectors. It does an exemplary job of stripping the reflective surface from the black plastic below.:banghead: I felt nauseous for a good few hours afterwards and honestly, I still do a little...

So here's my plight: If anyone has a busted pre-facelift E39 headlight rotting away on a shelf somewhere, I'd love to hear from you. Anything that I can salvage an outside reflector from would be just dandy. I know the chances aren't great, but there's no harm in asking... right?

Please feel free to look disapprovingly in my direction / jeer me / laugh at me / do whatever else you want. I deserve it.

Welcome to the forum firstly! :)

Ouch! Bound to be someone here that might be able to help or point you in the right direction. Also maybe keep an eye on gumtree...

Dude,

We dont point and laugh at the newbie, we just "snigger and make belittling comments" (Sorry I watch antz a lot, 4 year old)

Welcome, and dont feel to bad at this, we all make mistakes. I know I have had some monents of "briliance" in the past.

As for the light, I guess you are referring to the bowl on a non xenon style headlight ?

I'll definitely keep an eye on gumtree, but I'm hoping to find something that someone isn't necessarily trying to sell. I'll have to start with the breakers' yards - I'd appreciate any pointers as to who in the greater Jo'burg area might be worth contacting.

Correctomundo. The interior reflective surface itself.

One can literally reduce the headlight to probably about 20 parts once one's managed to pry it open. I've removed the 'bowl', as you call it, and I see even that has an individual Hella part number on it.

If push comes to shove, I'll send a soppy email to Hella in Germany & hope it finds its way to a sympathetic chap that side who might be willing to send one my way. But then, what are the chances of finding an emotionally exploitable German?

Damn, that was a really, really daft move on my part...

Well

You have Bemows in PTA, autofever in JHB, Electron in the South...

Those are your main BMW scrap dealers...

Electron is usually full of crap, Autofever is phycotic with pricing sometimes, and Bemows is a bit far, but the best bet..

Is the plastic chrome plated ? There is a chance for some bored guy to set up a home lab and.....maybe some new looking reflectors !

It is. Here's the truly daft detail, though: the outer reflector - the high beam - is made from aluminium. The Mr Muscle worked a treat on that. :)

pics please

You really want me to whack my non-existent reputation further, don't you? Fine. I'll solidify my idiocy with pics when I get the chance.

Progress report:
Auto Fever is a) open to today, and b) has at least one E39 headlight in stock which c) they don't want to rape me for. So there's hope. I'm still crossing fingers that they find a busted one under a counter, but if all else fails... Of course, if anyone with something similar on hand happens upon this thread, I'd still love to hear it.

Part Deux:
I found replacements for the fiddly plastic adjuster thingamabobs on eBay - R243 incl. postage for two sets. Hopefully customs won't knock me for the same again. :banghead: Even then I'd still come out ahead, as the agents want R308 for one set - that's R154 for one bit of plastic of about 80x20x20mm. Bastards.

Look disapprovingly...staring at your stupidity, jeer..."You are such a wally.", laugh...ha ha ha. Only jokes, and welcome to the club of errors :) I have made so many of these silly mistakes over the years, I have not been able to keep count! Worst of all, I still keep making them. We learn by our balls-ups. You have come to the right forum, all are friendly and helpfull, and give advice freely. So good luck with your headlights, and welcome:)

A yes, don't worry, I learned that lesson many moons ago as well.

For these lenses, use dilute dishwashing liquid a soft sponge and water only and air dry, don't rub them with anything esle whatsoever(Even toilet paper scratches)

There is a chance that if you can find a good mirror chrome spray, and I mean a really good one, you can make a temporary plan for now. It won't be perfect but the lights could be useable. Check out autostyle, they sell duplicolor chrome. The trick is to clean them ultra clean and just spray enought to get a shiny surface.

The original lenses have an ultra thin layer of vaporised aluminium on to make them shiny, and there are companies that specialise in this for other purposes, maybe you could find one of them. they do it in a vacuum chamber.

Here's the promised picture of my handiwork:

IMAG0024.jpg

:cursin:

I went past AutoFever & picked up the remains of a busted light. The reflector was covered in a layer of dust, so I couldn't judge its condition at all, but at the price they wanted for it I figured what the hell...

Suffice to say that the dirt, combined with the heat from the globe, buggered this one's surface as well. Not badly, but quite yucky compared to the pristine one I had before I went all chemical hero on it. :banghead:

On a whim I figured I'll give the guys whose website I came across the other evening a ring. Even though I've read all over the web that these things can't be recoated, they are confident they not only can do it, but do several every month. And at the grand cost of about R75 each! I'll drop two of the three that I now own off tomorrow and report back on the result.

In for a penny, in for a pound as they say...
