After all repairs were done, before connecting the upper and lower hoses, i ran water through the entire system to clear most oil before starting, after this , got me some liquid molly radiator flush, drove a few km and drained the entire system again, refilled with distilled water. no water was evident going to the block, and just for piece of mind i have send her for a oil service to make 100% sure no water is inside the oil. have since drained the cooling system three times and still a bit of oil resdue present on the cooling side. Will do it a few times more. Thanks for the help , it definatelty helped the bank account and saved time also.

hallo, no the oil cooler was fine it was only the rubber seals that failed, just have a look at the pictures, easy to do it yourself , if cooler is removed you will be able to see clearly if it is the seal or not, in my case only the seals.

So this is a common problem and it mostly stems from moron mechanics not owning or using a torque wrench when tightening the oil filter cap. This torques the entire assembly and compresses the gasket unevenly causing a leak. Also the bolts that hold the entire assembly together also get tightened by hand using an ordinary ratchet or spanner instead of torqued to the correct torque setting which also crushes the gaskets.

ALWAYS use a torque wrench when working on a BMW! If you notice your mechanic not using one, take your car away from them and do the job yourself or find someone competent who can.
