My E60 523i use to use 1L every 3500km -4500km depending on how I drove. No oil leaks no smoke , pooof $ gone just like magic.
If you look on the other bmw sites its very common

Well, mine is still showing max for now, so keeping an eye on it. My driving style is gentle a lot of the time, but not scared to take her to red line every now and again. So maybe it's a case of the engine settling down as time goes on. As long as nothing adverse is going on I am fine with some oil usage for an engine like these.

Yep, mine either has Castrol SLX or Magnatec Professional - when I asked SMG they said SLX, but this has been re-branded as Magnatec Professional. So keen to see how things go.

Not entirely rebranded.. SLX is off the market for some stupid reason and the replacement is the ugle green magnatec...

When it's time to change oil etc i have no idea what to go for :(

Use the Magnatec from BMW Jakkals, I have not had any issues. Yes its green but i had no tappet noise on start up at all and no drop in oil level since December 2011

Oh, okay, that was what I was told when I phoned the Castrol depo to enquire about price and availability. It is LL01 spec so let's see how it goes - used this for my Wife's car with it's last service now.

Was very keen to try and get Engen Syntium 3000 from an Engen depo, but they literally wanted to charge me the same price per litre as the agents... :nonono:

Okay, not sure what they were charging at the time for SLX, but from the depo I pay something like R55 per litre which is not bad!

Ok went to buy castrol SLX from Castrol in Paarden Island. They dont make it anymore. Its now called Magnatec Professional. And gues what the blady oil is as green as grass. When I put that first 1L in the X5 4.8is and saw this I said WTF!!! I hope this green as grass oil dont f up the engine. So I think they must have changed somthing even though they say its the same. well we will see what this green stuff does. The X5 does not use oil but would be interesting to see what it does in the 6cylinder cars.

Well, on my E46 I use 500ml topup over 11k km's.
Last time my car was serviced at bmw, and before, and before then, because it was still under motorplan. For oil + oil filter, + labour it came to R860, at bmw. They also put in the green oil in my car, and i must say it did sound much quieter than before. I thought I was imagining it, but like akash said, on cold starts the noise was also allot less.
