oil consumption on E90 6 cylinder

This could be a question asked many times before, but how is the oil consumption in your car(E90 6-cylinder)?

I find it strange that the oil consumption is so high (1litre per 2500 to 3000km) compared to my 325i E46 which used 500ml per 25000km.

Your 2 cents?

It shouldn't be using so much oil, that is very high consumption. Have you done a diagnostic on it?

Hi Rick318i

Believe it on not i took my car in to BMW this past weekend (E90 323i sportpack) because i thought it had an oil leak, the two mackies told me these motors will consume about 750ml for every 2500km or 3000km and it's completely normal. I bought a liter of oil and kept it in the boot for top ups. But they told me only to top up when the on board computer tells you to and no more than 1 liter is needed.

that is what i thought. I took a look at the manual and it says that oil consumption is "dependant on driving style and driving conditions"..
Guess if i drive it hard, it could be worse. :mmm:

it effectively means that if i add 1 litre per 3000km, then in 25 000km's i would have added 8.3litres meaning i would have replaced the whole engine inventory of oil, and then some, over then 12 month period.

Not really.....

I had my car for 5 months now and did about 20 000km already and the oil issue only arose now, the oil level on the car is at normal levels. I just got the oil as a precaution. Dont be to alarmed. But if it starts to drop like crazy, then there's a problem. The thing with the E90 is that its hard to check for a oil leak because there are covers under the engine.

My dad drives an e90 325i, mostly in town, and I stop at Forsdicks every now and then for a pint or two.

That car takes a litre of oil every 3000 - 5000km.

They claim it is normal.

When I bought my E90 330i the oil level meter showed it as half and then about a month ago it went over to the quarter remaining level. Have only done about 2000 km so far and from what I can see the car was serviced earlier this year which was 5000 km ago. It hasn't dropped again, not yet at least. But the problem is that it's obviously a block read-out, so you don't see the small increments as the level drops. Also seems heavy for me. But if you read some threads on another oversees E90 forum this seems to be a common thing with these engines - some more than others which I think is more to do with how the engines are run. And someone there also made the comment that the amount of oil consumption is high enough to say that by the time you have to take the car in for a service and oil change none of the original oil is still left in the engine since its been topped up so many times... Still needs to be changed though but interesting to consider.

What type of oil do I use in my 323i E90 - (for top up?)

Something I can buy at Makro?

Best is to try and find out what oil was used on your car's last service. It's either Castol SLX, now called Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W-30, or it could be Engen Syntium 3000 - not sure what else the agents might use.

You could simply go the agents and buy a litre from their parts department - usually costs around R95 or so for the Syntium 3000 for instance. Not sure if Makro would have the proper LL01 spec for BMW. Alternatively, see if you can find a Castrol or Engen supplier and get direct from them...

What is your overall oil consumption so far?

I have an E90 320 and I was also using 1l every 4000 - 5000 km.

Turns out that I had an oil leak on the vacuum pump. It was only picked up when my crank shaft sensor went and they guys stripped the bottom engine covers to fit the new sensor.

The oil was dripping onto the exhaust and burnt away before any could leak onto the floor.

I was told that this is a common E90 problem - not sure it it is only on the 4 cyl engines.

Hi Philip

Just recently bought the car from a friend. Seems that the oil consumption is in the region of 1-2 liters per 10,000km. About the same as my E46 320i (2.2l straight six).

Thanks for the assistance.

Kind regards

Ernst

These engines love their oil..

And yes they are known to use oil as per other forums and BMW.
I look at it this way... 1 litre every 4-5k km so you almost never have dirty oil in your car.. lol lol.

That oil consumption seems excessive, I have a E92 325i which I drive hard and it uses maybe 3 litres between oil changes.

For the specific E90's they confirm the oil usage to be more than normal but when testing and checking mileage to fill up with 1 litre is acceptable and not excessive according to BMW.

LOL, in the old days we used to laugh at Alfa when they built engines to use oil, now BMW does the same.
Even my friend's AMG Merc uses oil when he drives harder then normal.

My E60 523i use to use 1L every 3500km -4500km depending on how I drove. No oil leaks no smoke , pooof $ gone just like magic.
If you look on the other bmw sites its very common
