OBC average speed indicator.

When I bought my 2006 Cooper S, the OBC average speed indicator was at 34km/h. It has subsequently crept up to 59km/h.

My question is: Is this the average since the car was new, from start up to shutdown or is the average taken between trip counter resets?

I looked in the owners manual but this just states average speed :banghead:

 You can reset it between trips, and i think it has trip 1 and trip 2 average... Not sure if the Mini's do this, but the BMW's have that option.

Cool, thanx will play some with it and verify.

If I reset now and then check without driving it should register zero?

OK, just reset the trip counter but the average speed remains.

This tells me it can't be average between resets. The mini only has 1 trip counter. Any suggestions, including I'm am an idiot because I can't figure it out. :thinker:

Can you reset the avg speed. Hold button in. That means it is avg since new/ or last reset was done. did you buy it new or 2de hand?

Bought it 2nd hand.
Will try holding average speed button down for a few seconds and see what happens.

Held the stalk average speed button down for a few seconds and the average speed reset to 0. Thanx for the pointers guys. :slap: The guy on the right is me getting a slap for being dof.

You would be amazed at how many people own super advanced motor vehicles without a clue how they really work... Dont feel bad bud, the fact that you bothered enough to find out is already a plus point of note....

Sheesh, I have been trying, but that is mission impossible. Perhaps I need to go to the Karoo where there is lots of ice on the roads. :woot:

That suspension/steering combo is good is it not.

I actually dig driving the mini, that steering is so direct and precise

Yes, maybe I should try in reverse gear and emulate a rear wheel drive. That could be fun or it could end quite badly. :excited: :bump:

To reset the Average Speed indicator press the button on the Stalk until you get to average speed then hold it down for a few seconds and it will reset. Dont worry, it took me a while to figure that out.

Mini going Sideways ! YES oh YES ! The mini is the first FWD car that I could get to oversteer so easy, At Zwartkops its a laugh. I have some vids of me coming around the last bend before the main straight pass the pits sideways. I'll look for them tonight and post em up.

Try the ECU reset also. YOU CAN FEEL THE DIFFERNCE.

1. With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand, while holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand.
2. The screen will have a number and the word “tESt”.
3. Scroll through the numbers by pressing the odometer rest button, through to 19 and wait a moment. (Note: the number order is: 1,2,10,19)
4. The message will say 19 "L i-off", flash to "L i-on", and back to "L i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press the odometer rest button again. You are now in the system.
5. Scroll through to 21. tESt and wait a moment. 21.0 rESEt will come up. Press the button once.
6. Your gauges will now make some sounds and movements. Once the lights come back on start your car. You have now reset your ECU and your MINI is now ready to relearn your driving style.

Hi dvst8,

Got as far as step 3, scrolled and scrolled and never seemed to get to step 4.
Are there a boat load of scrolls to do before getting to step 4 ?

I have recently had the vehicle serviced and inspection 2 done.
Should I ask Zeemax to do the ECU reset when the car goes in at the end of the month for brake pads ?

I did some searching on the net and came up with this link:
http://new.minimania.com/web/DisplayID/2458/ArticleV.cfm

I think this maybe the same one you got the reset instructions.
If I disconnect the battery for a few seconds, this should give a 21 software reset as per the list of functions on the same web page.

I will try that and hopefully the OBC stilll remembers the my last service. :thinker:

:)The information displays in place of your mileometer(dont know what this is), so you DO NOT have to have the MINI OBC/Trip Computer option to see this.

A complete list of functions is below, this example is how to get into the menu number '7'.

1. With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button, while holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1.

2. The screen will say 'Test' and a number.

3. Scroll through, (pressing reset button) through to test 19 and wait a moment.

4. Wait and the message will say "log i-off" then "log i-on" and back to "log i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press again. You are now in the system. (Woooo)

5. You can (if you wish) start the ignition any time from now.

6. Scroll through to test 7.0 (or whichever from the list below) and wait a moment, after a pause you will enter the test 7.* range of information.

7. You can scroll through now (7.1,7.2,7.3 etc.) using the reset button.

8. You can exit each menu by pressing, holding for a few seconds, then releasing the reset button.

9. To leave the system scroll to 19 and leave it for a few moments.
Switching off the ignition also exits the system.

It must work, I do it every now and again.

dont worry, its a different procedure to reset he service Indicator.I can post that if you guys need as well.

Disconnecting the battery will NOT reset the Mini ECU. I have been down that road and battleduntil I found this procedure.

Have a look on www.northamericanmotoring.com. Best mini forum I've found so far.

OK, got it right now. Having a senior moment there.

The car's previous owner must have been a hairdresser as I have just been for a hard test drive. Teach that ECU from the beginning how this old fart drives. :)

Fark what a difference!!! Cant wait to do the pulley kit and decat. :excited:

My head is getting a bit sore after all the slaps though. It is worth it and I won't forget it in a hurry. :hammerhead:

Thanks guys, your patience and expertise is greatly appreciated.
