Number Plates

Not to sure, but your best bet would be to PM Coisman to get the exact details. I would guess if you get pulled over and you don't have a valid reason ie they don't believe you when you tell them that it fell off then its a R500 fine just like that.

People, just remember that you might drive without one of your number plates then the day might come that the other one really falls off, what happen if you get pulled over then? Court date, hefty fine, prison time, lose your car or licence?

Under the AARTO act thats right, :thumb: AARTO was suppose to go nationwide on 1 July 2010,
but there is still problems with the demerit points system.

AARTo still works under the National road traffic act, so even the small towns, or the ones that dont use AARTo yet, can still write you a R500 fine for just 1 numberplate, and still be able to arrest you for not having any numberplates affixed. :(

Also if you get cought obstructing, tampering, or anything that is done to hinder the traffic/metro departments from seing your numberplate, you could be fined, or sent to report to the nearest testing station for a roadworthy test, :yikes: your disc removed with a form called: Discontinue of Use" :censored:
Issuing of this form can be for anything the officer feels makes your car not roadworthy. :cursin:

Thats why I constantly hammer home the point, KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAN! :nono:
Dont go looking for trouble, keep yourself and your car legal, :boink: stating that taxis do this, and other drivers do that is a crap mentality.

Remember when you were young and you were noughty, your parents would ask: "So if your friend jumps in the fire are you going to do it to?"
Breaking the law cause you feel others are doing it and getting away with it, is stupid.
Its like killing someone because other kill.

Murphy's law you will be the one that gets cought, :locked: and sorted out, so just keep it legal,
then you know you dont have to worry wherever you go.

Thanks for the info. Just one thing I am still wondering about, they say if your licence is suspended for a third time it is cancelled. Does this mean if you go over 12 points for the third time? Or is it when you are 3 or more point over 12 points?

Ok, hope you understand it...let me explain.

you are allowed a max of 12 points, say you hit the 12 points, thats ok, as soon as you go 13 or over, lets say 13, you are deemed to be 1 point over.
Take the 1 point over, x3 so 3 months suspended licence.

say you were on 15 points, then 3 points over, so 3 x 3 = 9 months suspended.

After the suspention period, you have to go to the testing station and re-apply for a licence but you dont have to do the whole test thing over.

If you then build up another 12 points, same story as above, go over, x3 = months, then after that, re apply for your licence.

If you were to take a chance and drive while under suspention, you could go to jail for up to 1 year, + fines.

3rd time you get 12 points, youre licence gets totally revoked, and destroyed.

So... Lets say strike 3, and you went over with 2 points so you had 14, 2 x 3 = 6 months, then after that, you have to go do your learners, as well as drivers licence tests all over.

The good thing is, for every 3 months driven without an offence, 1 demerit point gets taken off.

Get it???

Yeah, I understands. It was only the part about the 3x suspended licence = 1x cancelled licence that I wasn't sure about (what 3x meant), but I understand it now thanks :thumb:

Saw this episode... very interesting
I meant the dust stuck to the plates makes it unreadable.
Have to admit though, my concience gives me a hard time when i do things like this.
But hell 100 zones just frustrates me, i never drive like a complete maniac,
love to cruise at about 140-160 depending on traffic and road conditions.

I can undestand the fine for non SABS plate

Coisman, can you enlighten us about the law regarding Laser Jammers aswell please.. What do you guys do if you have a roadblock and come accross a car that has one?

My friend was pulled over by reservist's, sticking guns in his face etc etc demanding that he rip the laser sensors off..

OK, sure.

It comes back to the charge of "defeating the means of justice" :nono: or obstruction of justice.

The same can be said for spraying silicone on and dusting it, 001asp, :sneaky: so you could also end up being arrested. :locked:
When I was still actively working in law enforcement I was sometimes seen as being too lenient. :boink:
I would take your details, and make sure to pay you a visit on the next shift, and give you till then to stop your kak. :nono:
BUT, that being said you try to be a smart/hard ass, :censored: you would see how mean I can be. :cursin:
The jammer and/ or anything that you do/use to stop the traffic/metro/saps from catching you falls under the above mentioned charge. :bat:

Ok, now for the question/statement of making you remove it... :wtf:
The officer is allowed to force you to remove such device on the scene.
If it was me say having rong plates, or a jammer, and I needed special tools to remove this, I would inform the officer of the fact,
and tell him he is more than welcome to follow me home, or visit me the next day to check up on me and my sly manners.
He cant force you to cause damage to your car, but dont get cocky, just ask politely. :) :) :)
Making you remove the number plate, I HAVE to take the plate as evidence, :boink:
but charge you for "Driving a vehicle where the numberplates fitted is non regulation" :nono:
I think that might be the ticket that shaddow was refering to, I have done it that way in the past.

Ok, anything you feel I left out, you are more than welcome to ask me...

Question for Coisman / Shadow worrior,

What would the traffic police like motorists to do when they see obvious drunk driving. Who should we report to it and when?
I have looked for numbers to phone but no luck.

Should we law abiding citizens become authorised traffic observers? (Arrivealive)

OK, phone the emergency number on your cell, the one that is normally free,
here in SA, if its Vodacom the number is 112.

These people can put you in contact with SAPS or traffic, ambulance, fire department, depending on whom of those two you want.
So ANY crime can be reported in this manner, not just drunk driving, and with vodacom the service is free.

Ok, so now you on the phone with, lets say, My call center where I am the supervisor... :)
That would be the Tshwane Metro Police, and you report the problem, first you say who you are, where you are, what the problem is, and your phone number for if the call gets cut of.

We then see in what region of Tshwane you are, cause like with SAPS we have different station areas. then if we have a car available,
we will see if we can get the car there ASAP!, if the offender is like you asked, drunk, if you can follow him while we on the phone with you,
till we get there, that would help, cause then we know where he is and we can direct our patrol car accordingly.
Also we would need a statement from you to say what he did, and why you called us.(that can also be taken later by appointment) :thumb:

Now, sometimes the officer will say, if the offender stopped at say his home, that they cant do anything cause they did not see him drive... :cursin:
LOAD OF CRAP!!! :bs: they just lazy, the law say as long as I have a witness willing to testify in court, I can arrest the suspect. :woot:

I really hope that if you were to find yourself in a situation where you need the law to come and help, no matter what the crime,
that you get the service you deserve. :boink:

Just remember guys when you call something in while driving your car be sure to do it using your hand-free :)

Coisman

If its an emergency then by law you wont get into trouble wen driving and using your cell phone.
Having the handsfree is safer, :thumb: but if at the time you are phoning through a complaint, you were to get pulled over, then at least the cop is there to help you, so you can put the phone down.

Remember, dont try to be RAMBO, :nono: rather let the cops handle it,
also, keep in mind that we have limmited resources, so we might not always be able to help. :(

I think :pimp: I must open a thread just for law related questions...

oh ya Coisman, I forgot to add,

With regards to Jammers, when you find a guy with one, do you give him a fine or what? You said obstruction of justice, would you have to go to court to get it sorted out or what?

Thanks
