Not worth chipping a 318i?...or any performance enhancements?

Ok so the ballie gave me an e46 318i facelift as my 1st car when I finished matric so I have her for almost 2 years now and don't have the bucks for a new coupe yet...still saving.

Anyway long story short,I want bit more power bsically just to lose the 1 sec dip on take-off and give it a bit more pluck. Its an auto making things worse.
SAC said its not worth chipping and even if I wanted to, they won't do it...punks. Why though?
So what's this reflashing ECU business I'm hearing about?
Any other ideas?
Im a 20 year old student on a budget too...bear that in mind, lol.
HELP please :)

they right ! :slap:

a good plan would be to save up nicely and get what you want.:thinker:

keep the 318 as a back up - no use wasting money to modify and get no satisfaction out of it :bawling:

you lucky dude - all i got 5 bucks and kick - :hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead:

Ah man. Alright. Its still an awesome car though. Had her from brand new in 2002 when facelift was just launched. 8 years old and mileage is 105000km. Gave it to me in 2008 with 80000km. So just thought maybe the odd performance mod or 2 for just a tiny bit more power.
Well now with that bad news, Just looking for subtle exterior mods then i guess...

Keep her stock man, that 2k that you were going to pay for those mirrors or that 4k for that set of mags you just have to have, put that in a savings account.

You can pick up a 330 nowadays for 120k, and at 12% interest over 5 years your looking at only 3,794 a month, if you put down a 20k deposit, your looking at only 3162,

Appreciate her for what it is, a very very nice comfy daily driver, save your money and put down a good deposit, and buy a second one, and that one you can go mad on..

Or alternatively, you can buy a E34 540, put in a manual gearbox with an LSD, change the suspension, put on some 18"'s with an ACS kit, oh and a supercharger... and a clean set of underwear...... that will do you nicely as well :excited:

i like the idea of the 540 (been looking for one but E39) slap a supercharger on it & you will have a great toy, zaleonardz lloks like we like the big cars hey
was looking at e39 m5 290KW, wow just imagain that thing with a charger

Partick, indeed dude.

We had a E28 as a kid, and since then I have had a fetish for big cars, the bigger the better, and there is no replacing for displacement, guess thats why I love the big diesels so much, that low down torque is fantastic.

I would love a E39 M5, was looking at one the other day as well, but if all goes well...... :)

lol, you guys have little faith hey ... case re-opened ... you can modify the shit out of a 318i..... if your prepared to get your hands dirty... can do some welding and simple machining.. you can pump lots of ponies out of your ride. plus dude, small turbo's are so damn cheap its not even funny. u can pickup small garret t3/t4 for 3K or less. get the other turbo bits from scrapyards or spend some time looking around for them, build or buy a small intercooler to the right size.. plumb it, and then u can get it tuned properly, and your having fun allready... if the car is paid off, your so much better off dude... get some bigger brakes, sport shocks and springs, some nice rims and tyres.. nice sportkit if u can find one ;) ... if u wanna start off with a small mod other than a turbo, get NOS, get some branches made and do a freeflow exhaust, but make it quietish, not too loud cause its only a 2 litre .. u should have the N42B20 engine I believe..

lots of fun to be had with it :excited: .. must just be enthusiastic and it will be an awesome car bro :)

Just wanted to revive this thread 1 last time. Not really interested in spending much on the car now, only plan on keeping her for another 2 years max. Anyway spoke to a guy at fastcar performance here in durbs. He also said not to go all out with a turbo on a 4cyl BM if you not playin for keeps. Anyway software would give me a 7 - 8% gain and cost is around 4k? Then this dude at fastcar said to decat and just change the back box and he could guarantee a 7kw gain for about R1350. Thoughts? Im on a budget so thought to do decat 1st then save a bit and do CPI remap in a month or 2.

It all depends what you are trying to do with your car?

Do those mods, decat etc, get a little more power, and go 0-100 in 10 seconds, or leave it stock and go 0-100 in 10.2? I dont see the point in modifying a comfortable, well engineered car. Not to be mean or anything, i dont think that a 2 litre bmw sounds nice if you are just doing and exhaust and chip.

In this case sadly i would say its go big or go home.

Ha, you can spend the money on making your car look pretty. Maybe do the suspension up a bit, half the fun of driving is found in the bends.
