discussion Non-BMW advice

No, not at all, I get what you mean and I agree.

Thing is, I’m not sure that there will be any more “niggles” compared to what I’ve had with BMWs over the years - I feel a lot of this is legacy baggage, and when I speak to actual owners I don’t get a feeling of immense disappointment and regret (speaking of JLR owners I know - ive had a number of Alfas personally and know what to expect).

I’m particularly warm on the SVR, so will do some more in-depth research and drive one.

Macan doesn’t appeal at all so it would have to be a Cayenne if I go that route.
Yeah, I'm not in this market, but Porsche (and by extension the VAG group) are selling 10s of thousands, probably well clear of 100s of thousands of the cayenne/macan type models a year. All of these cars are thus getting 100s of times more testing "in the wild" done on them than the JLR/Alfa stuff.
Just means error checking becomes way, way easier as it'll have been seen before. I'm keen to see how it all plays out though, like we're entering a world where a lot of cars are launched in a vaguely incomplete state (take teslas where on the air updates are standard and frequent), this sort of mindset is going to feed into production ICE cars as well where they'll say it's a fringe problem (consider, if your system has a 99.9% success rate that means if you sell 10 000 units you're expecting around 10 of them to fail - I'd imagine on cars these days the rates are even lower!)

The Macan was tested in Lesotho Highlands and Namibia, before being launched in SA.

The X3 was also well tested in SA conditions (it is made here after all).

To play it safe, X3 is the way to go.
M40i maybe....

Lol no issues with my back (yet). The ride of the X3M comp is horrid.

X3 is not in the game anyway.
X3M has 2 different suspensions setups. One with adaptive suspension and one without.

You cannot drive the one without andnexpect comfort.

Search for another one that has the option a d test drive it 1st

I'm loving the X3 so far. I'll do a review this weekend as I'll be home and able to take a couple pics as well.
Honestly the ride isn't bad at all for me, but I think my gauge might be off as it's coming from a dropped M3 and HAS M4, set to the lowest setting 🤣
I honestly didn't even look at these two when I was shopping - SVR was maybe 4th option, GLC63S was honestly the only other one to discuss, for me.
The Porsche I wanted was over R2M, so was a non-starter.

People have said similar about the X5 options - the adaptive M suspension vs the 2 axle.

That Jaguar SVR is one of the best sounding cars on the road! Way underrated.

I am with you on it vs Alfa.

I owned an Alfa before, its a unique car, but electronic gremlings were an issue (might have been fixed since). The fit and finish was great.

Imo, you are taking a massive risk wanting to spend 1,3 bar on a used car on brands that are known to have reliability issues.

As TBP88 mentioned, better the Devil you know. The only person I see here that can give advice based on actual experience is Turbollew.

Touch wood, I personally haven’t had such bad issues with my BMWs or the BMW Dealership I use/used to make me change to another brand. Furthermore there is plenty of knowledge available for BMW’s.

OP: I’m not considering an X3.

Most people: here’s some X3s to choose from.

Have you had seat time behind the Jag yet?

On two occasions with a Jaguar SVR, I had to look around to see “which car was that”….it’s exhaust tone is that good. Stock from factory.

Cayenne GTS exhaust tone levels.

Jag SVR all day every day - the exhaust note is addictive. The one linked is a pre-facelift with the older interior but sounds better as they’ve had to make the newer one slightly quieter with EU regulations. I have had one as a company car and loved it! Besides the car, I know the manager at that dealership and he is a deal maker and not someone to walk away from any issues, so I’m sure they will give you a great deal. If you decide to go ahead, chat to Marco, he will sort you out!

Thanks, will ask for him when I am there.

On the topic of the F/L, prefer the old interior rather than the stuck-on iPad one, and the seats look better. Will check what other changes the F/L entailed.
