NOISE ON START UP

hey guys

started the ci this morning

sounded like a loose belt noise

i checked the bely -seems tight

also i noticed the power steering cap has a sort of sweat around it-fluid is okay

any clues ?

to be honest -i've heard the sound before but it usually went away after 2-3 seconds -now it seems to stay for a few minutes and once hot -it's gone


water pump/power steering pump ?:mmm:

Altenator/Aircon... anything that runs on the belt drives, but more then likely PS

had same problem on mine...turned out to be the aircon belt that jumped off a touch....all i did was:
1 switch off the car
2 put it in first gear but leave handbrake off
3 jerk car forward by pushing and Wallaaa!!!! it jump back on and noise is gone...

although the steering is not hard and everything seems normal -i tried lock to lock- it's fine

like a screeching sound -exactly when a belt is loose

i tried switching the a/con on while it made the noise -no change

will see what's going on and check if the belts are sitting ok

chap reckons there are 2 types
long and flat/short

2950 for the short fitted -just in case it is the pump

have to check which one i have

Deano is having a similar issue, I will be replacing the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley tomorrow. Will let you know how much it costs.

I had the same issue with my 330i about 6months ago, while I was at it I replaced the water pump along with the 2 pulleys and a new belt. Now its whisper quiet and I have peace-of-mind as far as the water pump goes, good thing I replaced it when I did as the bearings were SHOT!!!!

Aircon test you have done.

Altenator can be tested that if you have the noise, and you turn on the lights, it should get worse.

Will let you know, I am looking for a thermostat as well, just in case.

My car runs cool, and obviously cooler with the manual then with the auto as the water cooler of the auto is cut out, sits nicely in the middle, but as you say, you cannot be sure. I do have a bit of a water leak though, so i guess some work to be done there.
