New tyres 225/245 for 323i

BTW frikkie, what wheels do you have on your car?

It's 225/45R17 in the front and 245/40R17 for the rear.
They are Michelin Sport contact 2.

The front tires are still okay.

Beggers can't be choosers - I bought it from my brother in law.
It's a great car but the "sport pack" is a bit of a concern - the car's ground clearence is very low...and this is Africa if you know what I mean.
I would like to stick to the standard sizes, but they are not good value in my eyes.

I currently have a set called TRACMAC 245/18/R45 on my e46. Front and back. Drives like a dream.On wet roads handles good, and the car is very stable on the roads.Im very happy with them,cost +- 6k.

Was asking, as I have the AVS Decibel & not too great

and I had the A Drive, they were ok considering the car had triangle tires before I fitted those..

So hopefully the AR 01 are better

At the very minimum I would like a more refined drive. That's the main reason for wanting to change tires. I also would like more grip. Would changing to 225 (or 235)/50/16 (from the standard Conti 205's I've got now) be a good step in the right direction ?

BTW, the 320i is not slow. It's all relative. I'm not on a track but if new tires will give better traction, more grip then that would be a benefit.

17" I would go for 235/45/17 all round

18" Would fit a wide/narrow set..

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm kind of on a budget at the moment and I can't afford to buy rims in addition to tires. So I was hoping I could use my existing rims and just get wider rubber. Would that work ?

Therefore I am careful of 235's for the rear - they wil definitely wear off quicker.

Then what would you get ? 225's ? 255 ?

IMO wider tyres will last longer, or not?

Not really, all depends on how you drive the car.
Like I told you on the phone, I had a set of 235/45/17's all round on my first bmw, and carried them over to this one when I bought it, and I still got almost 80k km's out of them.
Now I have a set of 245/40/17's cause at the time I bought them they didn't have 235's in stock, and thats the only reason I have them.
Look, at the end of the day you are the one that has to be happy with your purchase, and if you have doubts, then wait a few days and we can try to get you what you want, 225/245 spil like you got now, or 245's all round, your choice, I don't mind helping you out :thumbsup:

Olorin I found that in lots of cases (wrt tyre brands), 17'' tyres were cheaper than 16'' as they are a lot more common so in the long run it maybe cheaper to switch to 17''. Aesthetics are a bonus.
Maybe find a place that will do a trade-in on your current mags? Sometimes it works out that the price difference works out to more or less the same or slightly more than what you would have paid for 4 new tyres.
And with 17'' you can explore the ideas of 225-245 width.

That is why I am quite happy to stay with the 17" size even though the little voice on my shoulder is often trying to convince me to go to 18" narrow/wides - even non-RFTs in the larger sizes are hairy in price, let alone the RFTs. I am very happy with the Hankook RFTs that I fitted up front, will replace the rears in the coming months.

They ones that had the problems was the SP 7000, and SP 7000D, the SP 7000 had a very hard compound thus allot of roadnoise,
and the SP 7000D had a problem with balancing, and also messed around when driving, due to the fact that they were directional tread.
The first bunch of SP 6060's (November 2009 to August 2010) also had allot of roadnoise due to the compound,
but he assures me that the new ones he got in stock now are much better that the first one's.

Frikkie, if you like I can try and get other brands for you, but you might have to pay a bit more, say R50-R150 more per tyre. :thumb:

I think your contact is right coisman, the SP7k range is horrible, but i currently have SP Sport 6060 (fitted in Sept '10) on my E46 325i Touring and they are perfect for the job, in Oct '10 i did a 5k garden route trip in it and the road noise and overall service from them were absolutely fine! i would recomend these to anyone especially at that price ! :thumbsup:

So I won't be Gunea pig after all - Sounds good. I am on the point in fitting those tyres. I was strongly considering Hankook or Yokahama, but now a full circle has been reached. Looks like the SP6060's can work for me since I am no racing driver.
