awesome stuff. having a dedicated track car must be super nice.

have you done a lot of track time previously? if not, I would hold off on the semi slicks, they will be a crutch.

I've done a few trackdays with my 2L 8V citigolf and two with my E46 328i. I basically grew up at killarney, so motor racing is in my blood, especially with my dad having raced saloon cars for about 20 years.

I'm probably going to to with 15" wheels with dunlop SP racers on as the class does not allow racing tires, but it's going to be a learning curve for me with learning racecraft and improving my driving ability. Besides, it's good practice to first sort the suspension out on a car with low grip tires before investing in high grip tires. High grip tires don't solve handling problems, they only make the problems appear at higher speeds .

I will however need to sell my E46 and buy a cheaper car or sell my motorbike. Two BMWs and a bike could be a bit tough on the pocketbook.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Head is done at the engineers. Going to pick up this afternoon and buy gaskets and bolts tomorrow morning.

Hey!!

Yesterday was waaaaay too hot to put the car back together again, so did it today but could only get 90%. The timing belt is 1 tooth too long. it's a 128 tooth instead of a 127, so can't start the car. Booooo!!!

Here are a few pics....

Wrapped up nice and toasty!

Ready to go on!

My cat has to inspect. She brought me a bird while I was busy today and dropped it in the thinners bowl

Wynand, my handlanger.

Head is on.

I sanded down the tapped cover, sprayed it with some lft over high heat black and sanded down the raised parts. Looks SCHMART!!

Me putting the intake on.

I'm going to get the other timing belt tomorrow, so hopefully some hooning tomorrow night!!

Just got the right timing belt, so can get it running before I pick up the missus this evening.

She hates the car and says: "It's ugly and old." Pfffff. Women these days have no respect! Hehehehe.

Chuckle chuckle!

It's probably the case with any build. Theres always a little problem that shits in your pronutro!

With my turbocharged golf it was cam timing out by 90 degrees because of a fake timing mark and last night it was the distributor that was out by 180 degrees. We only started at about 22:00 because the missus wanted some attention.

The car wouldn't start and we heard the telltale "bloop" sound from the exhaust and sneezing from the intake that denotes a timing F-up. Changed that, but then there was air in the fuel line, so bled that. After that we managed to flood the crap out of it in some weird way and I wasn't going to fry the 328's alternator jumping the car the whole night, so I decided to rather get the new battery today and start the car under it's own power today.

Down side of working in the carport... My cold is worse because of the 14 degree wind last night. Booooooooo!! :yuck:

She started!!!

The new battery did the trick (as well as some more timing tweaking) and we drove her round the block a bit, but the car is very pap and is lazy to rev, so its probably the timing and mixture that are wrong. Sooooooooooooo, going to buy the new cam because mine is worn out of spec and then adjust the lifters and get the mixture and timing done properly.

There was a liiiiiiiiiiiiitle snag though. The water return pipe out of the head that goes to the cold start valve sprung a leak. Not the pipe itself, but the aluminum spigot that sits right up against the firewall. I'ts tighter in there than a sixteen year old's hoohaa, so going to see if I can pratleys putty the bugger before I strip everything off to replace the part.

I also washed the car, but she's in need of a serious buff!

Good progress!! With these old cars there is always something breaking. Fortunately on the E30 it is less costly than the newer models!!

Everything I've done so far on the E30 has cost about half of what a junkyard alternator costs for the E46.

Fokken belaglik!

Not yet, no. I'm going to take it to a workshop next week to get the CO and mixture done, so will if everything is cool then.
