Iv got a E90 320d Auto
yes the car is decent and has loads of torque and the Fuel economy in Sandton traffic is okayish
But irritates me to death sometimes when I need a bit more midrange power

To be fair I think a 328i will be my next choice
Its prob similar fuel consumption in traffic as my 320d

Thanks for the replies.

I think I'm going to get the 328i. I don't mind going from auto back to manual. The 328i already has things such as the 18" wheels standard so the only option I want to add is the xenon lights (I've hardly ever used the sunroof in any of my cars.

I feel its worht spending 15 - 20k extra to get the 328i - with the only difference (appart from the engine etc.) being the gearbox.

You won't regret it! Go go go!!!!!:joy:

Even on the fuel efficiency side, the 328i has some impressive figures.:

Until its driven in the real world. Expect at least 10l / 100km and you will have to drive like a granny to achieve that.

I give my E46 320d horns quite often and average 7lt per 100km with 50% town driving. Keep that 328i in boost for a while during a down trip and see what happens to the figures.

I can't see that happening, I get between 10 and 11 on my car, 3.0l N/A engine.

320d, no doubt about it, later on, the 328 will once again become a 325, possibly with a six again and u will have an obsolete model in the current shape, it's happened with all previous shapes, the 328 will be a 325 or 330 come the facelift of the f30 when they change motors, 320d will always be with us...

i was gonna get the base 320d with manual and only options being the adaptive headlight package.

once youve had zenon, you cant go back, try driving the navara with std lights and :yuck:

drive them and then decide, have driven both, and must admit the 328i is a bullet, but at todays fuel price, then diesel

I am TOTALLY with Colin on this... Go drive them first... trust me!!!

On the launch I drove the 320i, the 320d and the 328i, and I will be lieing if I tell you the 328i was a better car than the 320d... :nonono:

Yes, the 328i is MOER quick, but dont underestimate that diesel... I was driving in normal "D" mode, and it was quick and responsive, yet smooth and sofisticated, and the salesman kept telling me: "Put it in sport mode!!" so I finally did, and it was scary how quick that thing became!! :dropjaw:

Dont make a decision on what we guys tell you, GO DRIVE BOTH!!!

Drive both as Cois says.
I'm in the same boat but shopping for the old man, not me.
Toss up between 320d and 328i. I drove both, that autobox is phenomenal and I'll definitely get an F30 in auto when I'm upgrading.
The 320d in the F30 feels miles apart from the E90 yet its the same engine. That torque on take off is awesome. I drove it for about 20km city driving and a bit of a stretch, with giving it horns consumption read 5.9 so I'm quite chuffed ito all round economy and performance of the oil burner.

The 328i you could feel the difference of a more refined petrol engine and that thing fcks off! Stated consumption of 6.3, you'll prob get closer to 10.
Lower down the torque of the diesel felt better but mid range and top obviously the 328 would trump.

For an all round car if you not too phased by power then I would say nicely spec'd 320d auto.
It might also hold it's price better than the petrol in years to come.

328i manual + xenons + sunroof. Not opting for the sunroof will affect resale.

The 320d (like all diesels) feels faster than it is because of the torque, whereas the 328i is fast without pretense. If the 330d was available I'd say get it.

yes there is a changeover with numbers but how does the 328i become a 325i?

E46
328i 2.8l
325i 2.5l

E90
328i 3.0l
325i 2.5l (yes europe got a 3.0l but it was detuned to put out the same as the 2.5 so still not a 328i)

now that they are boosted i fully expect the only differences to be boost levels so it should be pretty much the same story as the 320d used to be...
