Needing power! help

Hi All! need some help here.
I bought myself a Bmw e46 318ti 2005 with N46B20A engine, 85 000km.
Now i wanna boost it!

K03 turbo?
Tuning software?
Injectors?
Can valvtronic be turbo'd?. I dont want huge power, looking at 0.5bar.

Any pro's that can help me with info?

I would think spending about R40k-R50k for a proper job is not the way to go, its really over spending...
You could probably get a turbo conversion done somewhere more cheaply, but i pretty sure it goes like this... you get what you pay for!! :rollsmile:

In my opinion there is not much power to be gained. I drive the same motor in my wife's 318i and it is what it is, a great motor with good fuel economy. That being said I say if you want to do it then do it! Would love to see the write up! :thumbs:

kinda pointless if you want my opinion.. boosted at 0.5 bar i doubt a 318 will even run with a m3..
if you gonna blow that kind of cash start with at least a 325I or better yet a 330i..

Remember, our fuel here is shit. youre going to have to drop compression in order to save your motor.

You have to literally upgrade everything from motor to fuel lines.

a Ko3 turbo is stock turbo on vag 1.8t (early edition) motors. They will not give you what you are looking for.

Feel free to stop by project shift any time and I can show you exactly what you are in for.

Major components you are going to need:

turbo (garrett is best)
exhaust manifold
pistons
rods
bearing
head studs
intercooler
boost piping
blow off valve
management or some form of piggy back
injectors
fuel rail
fuel lines
fuel pump
water meth (recommended)
downpipe
oil feed and return lines
water feed and return lines
etc
etc
etc

.5 bar is also a waste. higher boost is better.

Also remember that you MUST upgrade your clutch, brakes, suspension and bravery. :rollsmile:

Also, when it come time to sell your car, you're not going to get a cent back on all those mods. However, if you mod something like a E46 330i (for example), then at least you've got a larger market to resell your parts before you sell your car and recoup some of your cash.

My advise would be to keep the car stock. If you want more power, sell it and start off with a car that's a good "base" for modding. With modding, you always lose money - you just have to figure out a route that minimises the loss with maximum gain/enjoyment ... if that makes sense.

I boosted my 323i.

Did 0.4 bar. It gave me the ability to beat 330i's, Golf 5 GTI's and sometimes stick with M3's up here at the reef from Robot to Robot. But that's a 2.5 litre engine. Any GTI with a moderate Tune would hand me my ass again, and it was a lot of money for that.

In the end., I just bought an M3 and am supercharging that.

No point doing up your car man. Listen to those that have done it. Save up the money and buy something faster.

I agree with Crash. Sell the ti and Buy a E46 M3. However in this world, if we always did whats practical and makes sense then we would'nt have diversity. Some people have a love for a certain car, even though it may not be a great platform and any thing can be done with the right money. However if you do some research, you'l find that engine is not ideal for this.
So if you really want to do your ti, maybe look into an jap engine swap.

So how's the build going? A boosted ti would be great.

I say if your reason for wanting it is to have a boosted ti that's different from the rest, and unique then go for it.

You will always get told rather buy a faster car etc, I would say this if your end goal is you want a fast car.

So I hope you go for it, I would love to see a full build thread for a boosted 318ti. So please do it

Im with Burgy on this ,,,Unless you want to throw serious bucks down dont upgrade the turbo ,,,If you really have to have to i would maybe suggest software just for a little more oomph :rollsmile:

Rather keep it stock, or sell it for something stronger.

Hi all, ok i posted but turboing my bmw e46 318ti, this thing is pup! it has the N46B20 engine de-tuned to a massive 105kw... yay.

not gonna turbo.. its kuk pricey.

New plan... change to 6speed gearbox(lighter fly, so she will rev up quicker. less nm but more kw?) and shorter ratios.

next.. could i bore this engine to a 2.2 or 2.3? having visions of the old e30 m3.. what mods would i need other then? injectors?

next.. diet, take out all the kuk i dont need.. back seats etc.

next.. coil overs(on the floor), big A-line racer mags(love that look) 17" or 18" in black.

and all the other bits project shift can do... gaz-horst, manifold, intake, chip and tune.

My goal is not to have m3 power, just enough to have fun!
