Hi, I just bought a 1993 BMW 318i. Just had it at the mechanic and he says the 1 coil pack needs replacing. Where can i find a coil pack number on coil is?

93 M 04
Zundspule
1734 468
20520110 010

And what would it cost?
Also how can i find out what motor is in the car
I believe the motor in there is not the original motor
the engine number is 04687774

Do you know whether the engine in the car still a 318i engine (but not the original one) or is it a different engine. Is it a 4 or 6 cyl engine.
Maybe you can upload a pic of the engine that might also help.
The fact that the engine has coil packs I would wager that is a 6 cyl or fairly 4 cyl engine.

For a new coil you could go to the a dealer, directly to bosch (I assume bosch makes the coil packs) or you could go to bemows (if you are in pretoria or gauteng area), as far as price is concerned I am not sure, but I would guess it would be fairly expensive.

My guess then would be that it is one of the later 4 cyl engines maybe from 2001 onwards.

Good news bud, coil packs are relatively cheap...

Dealer, Bosch, scrap yard (any - they should be quite popular), ebay, somebody on the forum.

What symptoms are you experiancing ?

http://www.realoem.com was a lot of help. The part belongs to a 318is
e36. Dont know why the mechanic cant trace the part will phone the BMW dealer tomorow and see if they have stock. The car idles a bit rough and sounds like you are driving on 3 cylinders. The mechanics says it is one coil pack that is faulty it still sparks but not right.

If it sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders, it might just be that it is running on 3.
I think to check you could disconnect and reconnect the coilpacks one at a time, if you disconnect a coilpack and the engine runs worse, then that specific coilpack is fine, if you disconnect one and the runs the same then that coilpack might be the one causing the problem.

I had a broken coil on an 1.8 A4 once and fixed it with Pratly steel???

Disconnected the coilpacks one for one. Number 2 coilpack seems to be the faulty one. I have ordered one from BMW today ( R1100.00)
should be here tomorow. Will let you know if it solved the problem. Thanks solong

so far my Front Disks and Pads cost me R750. vs Dealer just 1200 for pads alone, no fitment.
and the expansion tank 775. dealer 1100.00, no fitment

So just a guess. Pads and disks at Dealer R2500?
Expansion Tank 1800.
total 4300.

DIY 1600.00 and some time.

The coilpacks aren't that hard to remove and replace I've done it before on a 325 engine, the engine isn't in a car so that possibly made it a bit easier . If you are removing the coil packs it is probably also a good time to check the cylinder head cover gasket for oil leaks.

Edit: This is what it look like on a 6cyl engine (M54), remove the cover and each coil pack has two hex bolt and a connector that has to be removed and out it comes:

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the info. Car is running fine now. Took about 1 min
to put in new coil pack. While taking the car for a test drive a heard
a ratling noise, looks like the drivers side engine mounting is of, founded
a second hand one in Capetown for R100.00 ( Dealer price R900.00 ) Part should be here on Saturday cant wait to take here for a proper drive. Will upload some photos this weekend.
