Hi All

Can anyone tell me if the below is a common problem on 320d.

the car has done 150k km and had no problems until recently.

When I start the car it smokes alot of white smoke when I idle. when I drive after a while it goes away and doesnt smoke at all...

I have been told that it is the engin breather in the crank case that needs to be replaced.

Another guy told me that it was the turbo going....

I still have power on the turbo and it sounds fine.

can anyone give some advise???

thanks

Replace the crank case breather, its like R800 (yes, it is common to clog up and should actually be replaced every 3rd service). If the problems go away, happy days... If not, replace the turbo.

Exactly what my car done, only I have the petrol motor. My car is at the machy as the car had a complete mechanical failure. I initially thought it was a bearing.

My machy is now saying he thinks it's the cat converter and will confirm after the car has been on the diagnostic machine.

My car is now on 140 000kms.

In other words - check the cat aswell :thumb:

The cat has no part in the smoking of the engine. Smoke on startup that goes away can also point to a faulty EGR (Exhaust gas recycle valve.) Clean the EGR also.

But definitely look at the breather.

Funky....

Erm dude... wtf.. the above makes so sense what so ever...

I think you machie may be a lil bit of a twit, either that or your not explaining properly.....

What would make you think its a bearing, cause trust me, you will know if its a bearing. Bearing knock would not cause smoke.

Complete mechanical failure means a piston through the head or at least a rod out the sump... when these things do "completly fail", its quite a metally experiance

How much smoke are we talking about, on the petrol motor.

As for the 320d. p1000 is spot on as always...

Thanks Guys.

I have removed the Cat at about 100000km. Ill start with the breather then. take it from there...

Will let you know what happened.

If the EGR is bypassed or blanked off. is that bad for the engin?

No, nothing wrong with blanking of the EGR. The ECU will record a fault, but it won't trigger limp mode, or even indicate it on your dash.

Booked the Breather replacement for tomorrow morning.

Mech charging me R1500.00 to replace it. lets see if it worked.

Much better than a new Turbo.... What would a garret 1 turbo cost fitted??? anyone know?

Apologies guys, response was made in a hurry and I could not explain myself properly. Will teach me not to post in a hurry.

Glad the car is sorted Legend88 - Will have my machy look at that as well on my car.

Hi guys

I just got a 320d e 46, 2005.

The car has two issues that is concerning me.

1. The turbo (or something) is making a relatively loud whistling sound. The car still seems to have good power etc, so not sure what it could be. It seems worse when car is cold.

2. The car vibrates alot , i know its diesal but I had a 330d before and it was far smoother on idle. This car vibrates alot on idle.

Any thoughts on these would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

terrel, please make your own threads if it is a new/unrelated topic like this.

1. If the turbo is louder than normal, it could be a sign that it is almost out the door, but if you have no reference as to how it should sound normally, you could mistake normal turbo whistle for a problem...

2. If it vibrates a lot, it could be an injector that needs to be replaces/overhauled causing lumpy idle, or lumpy idle due to a worn out engine, or it could be due to worn out engine mounts. The mounts are vacuum controlled and are supposed to be softer at idle to absorb more vibration. When they wear out, they start to leak and the vacuum assist will not be able to soften them up anymore resulting in more vibration and sometimes harsh shifts of the automatic transmission.

Replace glow plugs

Glow plugs hardly ever do anything above -10degC, so that won't help much. It could sometimes cause a bit of smoke on colders days, but only on startup.

Hi All

Was so happy when there was no smoke, but i think it went into limp mode? I posted another thread on this issue.

The car is just lazy. Any advise?
