Before going out and buying a new one, perhaps it would be worth just pulling it out and checking the soldering points at the top of the pump where it connects to the cover. If the E46 pump setup is anything like the E39's, it could very well be as simple as a loose soldering joint. Good Luck

@jakkals, Seems like it! Wish the fuel pump would take my budget into consideration though!

Cars will never tell you. You always get caught off guard especially for expensive fixes.

I was wondering: The pump works one moment but is dead the next couldnt the problem be my key? as my keys dont remotely open my car anymore?

boet, the key still swings the motor...

Faulty petrol pumps or ones on the way out work intermittently, you need to have it replaced...

Can't see how your key would power the fuel pump.

Maybe try what they suggested and check for loose connections.

its price madness I tell ya, that's why I DIY'd my petrol pump... LOL
Just swapped the actual pump and kept the pump carrier... The only difference thus far is that you can hear that thing pumping all the time...

@ Raybimmer: Will check with them as well however my original pump is working just fine now?????

Still think it's worth checking those soldering points...especially with you just tapping the cover and it all working again...sounds pretty typical. Before you buy a replacement, tick checking the wiring under the screw cover off your to-do-list. It'll take you 15 minutes. Might not be the case, but what you got to lose? At least then you know it's not a silly electrical issue, especiallly seeing that these items are not cheap.
