I have searched the older forum threads on the subject but none of them really match my problem:

my e46 320i isnt starting this problem popped up last night (I had to jump start my car earlier in the day as my battery was dead) I eventually got her started but now I am stranded at the *&^&^$ office the fuel pump is not running at all, is the problem a broken fuel pump? Blocked fuel line? or broken Knock sensor??? WTF!!!!

Tap the fuel pump with a spanner, sometimes the fuel pump is on the way out and a good tap will get it going. Need more info on symptoms as to try and help you out.

Just swinging, got it started before by turning the ignition on and off until I heard the fuel pump engage and then cranked

That does sound like Fuel pump then. Have you checked all the fuses to rule those out?

I don't know the E46 that well, hopefully someone who knows more might know if there's other fuses to check.

You can try tapping the pump itself, although I'm not sure where exactly it's located on the E46. Again I hope someone who knows the E46 can give more info.

But if the pump has given in completely, then I think you might be stuck. You might be able to get a new aftermarket pump from a local parts place and swap it out, but that depends on how easy it is to get to the E46's pump.

Looks like it's under the rear seat. Here a Vid that looks like it will help:

It's not that simple to swop out from looking at the vid. Think you'll probably need to organize someone to come pick you up, unless you feel confident enough you can get a new pump and you have the right tools to swop it out. But it does sound like the fuel pump is your problem.

take the back seat out and let someone listen once you switch the car on , no noise is a dead pump or no voltage . Check first for voltage , also if you could take the pump out you can try put 12 volts on it from your battery and see if it makes a noise or runs .
Good luck , I know Autozone normally sell pumps , also try Goldwagen if you can .

How much fuel is in your car---I used to have this issue as well with my petrol pump before it went kaput... Found that if I have anything less than 1/4 tank the car wouldn't start or would cut out if I am driving and stop. Fill up with 5 litres and good to go... I ended replacing the fuel pump.

ok so I took the seat and the cover off found the petrol pump and tapped it with a spanner so now the car starts! But what does this mean?????

@ TLvivo, my car is on less than a 1/4 tank at the moment will fill up in an hour and post the result

:bangdesk: buy a new fuel pump... that one is telling you it wants to retire.
