Parts are anything but easy to come by (I have been sourcing stuff worldwide and some things dont even have part numbers from BMW "Unobtanium") and these cars are for the slightly nuts enthusiast who is not really going to add any expenditure up.
The cost of getting mine back into shape is already over R100K and I still need to replace the gearbox and do rings sometime............. it's simply scary to think about.
That being said thay will fetch higher and higher prices as time goes by. Remember this is the last of the hand built M cars, and there are not very many left.
Before anybody makes more comments about this one or that one being too expensive, go actually buy one and tell me how much you spend to maintain it in only 6 months.
Pay attention to this ^^^^^.
I've been entertained over the last 3 years or so about the views on this forum concerning the value of the E34M5.
When I offered mine for sale on this forum for R140,000 about 3 years ago, I was basically told that I was smoking my socks. It had only 70,000kms on the clock, was very clean, was being sold with all original parts (incliuding the stock rims with both the turbine and throwing star sets of covers), was one of the fastest examples around and required no repair or maintenance work. I had sorted out everything that required attention (at a substantial cost). Instead, I was told that one could pick these up for R50k to R70k. Sure one could - but that would invariably be one with 200k on the clock which required significant repair/maintenance work with concommitant costs running into tens of thousands of rands. And once all of this money was spent, one would still be left with an E34 M5 with over 200,000 on the clock.
Anyway, to each his own. I perhaps was smoking my soaks as 3 years later I still haven't sold my car even at a significantly reduced price. However, to anyone lays his hands on a high mileage example at a relatively low price, I say CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!
