N55 rip

Stupid service intervals, and the dealership telling me NO, we will not change oil or plugs before the car hits 75k, despite plugs last been done 50k ago, was what got me into working on my cars way back in 2014. Till then, I hadn't lifted a spanner in my life to work on my own cars.

To the OP, sorry to hear about your misfortune, and its should be covered under warrantee. Keep us posted

Out of curiosity, in the N55 - how often should the plugs be changed?

Sorry to hear about the motor, but I'm pretty sure BMW will honor the plan.
There is checks and balances they need to do before putting in a new motor. If it was my business I would do the same.

On the oil service interval, I just changed it myself between dealership intervals and kept quiet about it. Literally takes 30 min and R800 at most.

Changing them at the oil service intervals should be fine. Always a good idea to keep a few extra at home. Spark plugs usually get wet and coated in a layer of grime that's what causes them to go bad as well as running rich fuel mixes, from my experience. Going 1 step colder or something similar will help with your spark plug longevity.
Your motor wont immediately explode after a spark plug goes bad- your car will sound like a straight pipe 5 cylinder and will run into limp mode- your saving grace to get home and get it changed lol.
Also a good idea to keep a few extra coilpacks at home as those can pop intermittently, the Delphi coilpacks are utter trash for the N55s- they pop after a couple of full load pulls. Bosch are the best. It's better to change one at a time than changing all 6 at the cost of R6-7k.

BMW did all sorts of tests when I had a engine failure, think they call it puma testing. So ya, it's normal. As a side note when I collected my car with the new engine in I asked what happens to the old one and was told it was shipped to Germany for further tests.

Yeah I agree that this is the best way to do it, unfortunately not all of these cars are bought new by those with knowledge on proper maintenance. Problem comes in when you buy one second hand and the oil has been in there for 50k kms already.

Perhaps someone with recent experience can shed light on how often their oil was actually changed in plan... Would be interesting.

I'm sure it's just a process that needs to be followed in order to get approval from BMW SA to replace the engine.

Also its good to find the cause of the failure so that you can prevent another failure occurring for the same reason.
Using turbos as an example, seen many turbos destroyed for whatever reason and then having the turbo repaired/replaced without finding the cause only to sit with a broken turbo again in quick succession

100% Danny...It is really annoying to wait or for things to seem drawn out when you don't have your vehicle with you but overall, patience pays off if they are doing the correct process and procedure.

Good luck OP!

It has.. I usually do it with my cars. I extended my Ford Everests warranty to 200k.. At 136k my foed engine had a injector failure and blown the engine... R15K VS R100K. no brainer

But both the engine failures on the ford and bmw is just unlucky.

I alsk had a fn2 type r.. I use to take it to the limiter daily. That engine never gave me any issues. I use to service it myself..

Bt the cars on plan failed me. I will definitely start doing oil changes on them.

Had a FN2 R as well, had a hondata on it and would rev it to about 8800rpm with ease - miss that thing
