Gents.. On Saturday i drove to the shop.. 2km.. Then i decided to take a drive to heat up oil etc as the wife uses the car. After 5km of driving slow i returned home. 500m from my house the car just died.. Briefly before i heard a ticking noise. Then dead. Bmw fetched the car ans report engine seized. Car is under plan and zero mods. My question.. Has it happened to anyone before.?
Car is a 2014 m135i with 75000km.

Shew!

That sounds really horrible, possibly oil starvation? I found that the oil level sensor on these cars are horrible....

Wow - most likely oil starvation - oil pump failed or oil sensor failed and it ran dry without warning maybe?

Sorry to hear bud. Your saving grace here is MP, keep us posted.

This is the main factor that put me off the N55 platform.. Can't be driving a car and worrying about when it will run a bearing, due to oil starvation.. Yet another BMW design marvel.. :skit:

Has not happened to me. My N55 F30 is a 2014 model (which i have owned since new) and has 182000km.  After motorplan ended i service my car at 10,000km.  Im always at pains to tell my wife to check oil level at least once a week on her car. On f30 models you cant check oil while car is driving. You have to literally stop and check it.

You were fortunate to have extended your motorplan and b) you have the added peace of mind knowing that your car is stock ,granted that still doesnt mean BmwSA wont look for an excuse or stall to replace the engine. Keep us posted on your progress.

These electronic oil level sensors will only give you a some what accurate reading after maybe 15km of open driving.

But if the oil level was low enough to seize the engine without the oil light triggering i dont see an issue with them replacing the engine under motorplan

BMW are full of kak though

It's the 2year / 25k kms service intervals... And I'm not even sure if they change oil at each one of those. Worst part is BMW will try by all means to persuade you from servicing early even if you want to pay cash.

Sorry about that, at least you still have motorplan!!! I read a bit on other forums and this might be a rod bearing issue. Yes on an N55.

They updated me. Said they sending the fuel away for testing. BMW SA is still investigating.

I check the oil regularly.. Car was oil serviced at 73000km with all filters.. Wasn't a scheduled service bt i requested they do it. Bt oil was good.

The fuel ? are they tying to insinuate that you were running ethanol or octane booster and that fu**ed up the oil?

Im not sure.. I asked the same thing. But they said its standard protocol. If the fuel was bad i could have run lean... And melt a piston. But i have filled the car up and been driving for 2weeks. So the fuel cant just go bad after 200km..

Looking for a way out if I think, also, I'm not too clued up on the engine control dynamics of the platform, but surely if it was running lean this would of caused knock/detonation and forced the car to over-fuel for protection ? bmw's are famous for going into limp mode as well so surely something would have triggered that too before catastrophic failure?

Also fuel quality varies from place to place, and the cars are made built to cope with that?

have they even opened it up if they are suspecting a melted piston? or tested the oil level sensor? It seems like they are going the extra mile the cheap way from the comfort of a desk to avoid having to use man-hours to investigate the failure. Too much effort for them to drop a sump or pull a head it seems...

We used to call these "armchair technicians"

The service intervals are absurd and if you have a faulty oil level sensor in between, prepare for disaster.

I have not been stopped from paying cash for an interim oil service, but they might have kept it off the books.
