N54 oil temperature when hot

Good Day Gents.

I Couldn't find any posts relating to this topic, however I would like to get an idea of what the normal operating oil temperature is on a N54 motor?

I have a 2008 E82 135i, when I got the vehicle, the oil temp used to be around 90-95deg when hot, after bmw topped it up with oil, the temperature has gone up to 115-120deg when hot. I have a feeling they could have thrown old oil in as they gave me quite a few excuses as to how much oil my vehicle needs, and also had my vehicle in the workshop for just under 2 hours while I was waiting.

Now I can here a ticking sound coming from the engine... I'm assuming its my lifters :argh:

I dont thing they would have put in old oil. Its easier for them to put in new oil, then having to get old oil from the refuse oil barrel and then put it into you car.

Hows your oil level after some steady driving?

Its usually sits on the top notch, basically 3/4 mark,

not to sure if I'm reading the oil level correct, but in the pic below, it looks as if the oil level is below half.

What happened to the days where we had dip sticks? lol

The ticking sound you are hearing is the direct injection....

I'm assuming that its normal for the engine to make that noise then?

I've heard a clicking sound coming from my gearbox/clutch when the clutch pedal is depressed halfway and the vehicle is in gear, is this perhaps normal as well?

You are about 750ml low on your oil.

I would but a 1litre of oil from the dealer.

Fill about 500ml.

After about 15mins of steady driving check the oil again. If it 3/4 full then fill another 250ml and then keep the rest.

The ticking noise is your lifters. Your oils level is low based on the picture

My oil temperature is on 110deg normally and goes to 120deg when driven a little harder. Think it is pretty normal with the N54 engines.

Your temperature readings look normal to me. Most of us see the same 110 to 120 degree max depending on driving style.

As for your oil level this is done via the thermobaric oil level sensor and is prone to being fooled by moisture, especially if you do short trips. Drive the car at medium revs for 15min to get rid of the moisture and you'll see your true oil level.

I've had this happen several times to me, most recently a week after an oil change I did myself. I drove my car to work and back and parked in my steep-ish driveway for 10min. When I came back out and started the car the oil level warning was triggered and the gauge stated I was under a quarter. I switched the car off, restarted and checked the gauge again and saw the little clock icon turning. I took the car onto the highway and drove for roughly 10min at a reasonable pace, checking the gauge every so often. Eventually the gauge displayed my oil level as being full.

Thanks Gents.

Appreciate all the info

Anyone know what's the best oil for the N54? I know the dealers use LL-01, but I heard Castrol Edge 5w30 or Mobile 1 0w40 and Liquid molly is good as well...

your oil level is ok that is why OK appears on the instrument cluster, the level will always vary, the disadvantage of not having dipstick. when oil is required it will tell to add and by how much.

I would top up your oil, you are 750ml sjort of oil.

Its best to have maximum proctect, more so on an N54 running two turbos.

Get your oil from the dealer. They tend to be cheaper than anywhere else.

Yes 115/116 degrees is normal.Driven hard without speed limiter it will go up to 130.Limp mode comes in at 135 to protect motor.
Burger Motorsport has a unit that brings max oil temp down to 100.Dean on the forum i think has done a post on this.

When I still had the 1M, it went up to 130°C on Kyalami, and 120°C with my normal driving style. So yes, the oil in the N54 runs very hot. Get the Burger oil thermostat, and it will never get that hot.
