N54 135i-Vanos gears or Vanos solenoid ?

Hi guys

Car recently went into limp mode and CEL on upon start up.

Took into my mechanic and they had informed me that the only code it’s throwing is a Vanos code and they’re not telling me what the code is , they’re just saying that the the Vanos gear is fault (not to sure weather it’s the intake or exhaust gear).

They’re asking me to buy new gears . However with my knowledge and experience with these cars I know that the most common fault is for the vanos Soleniods to be the cause and not the gears.

Im a bit skeptical as I would rather pay for doing the solenoids and not the gears as the price difference is quite big .

I would like your opinions as to what you guys think it could be (gears or soleniods?)

And if it could possibly be the gears at fault , what are the symptoms . Because with my knowledge the car is throwing symptoms to faulty soleniod/s

Thanks for the help guys

Take the solenoids out clean them out with carb cleaner and compressed air. Put them back in should be good to go if error code returns then replace the solenoids
