My wife's X3 E83 Sportpack Build.

Thought I should put up a build page for it as I cannot keep a car std for more than 1/2 an hour, lol. This X3 is the replacement vehicle for my wife's silver '02 330i with 274 000km, its a Sept 2004 built registered 2005 BMW E83 X3 Sportpack 2.5lt Black Sapphire Metallic on 155 000km but with a low mileage M54B30 swap, awesome! Plus the 2.5lt is thrown into the deal and I got the lot for R6000 under trade value, plus the former owner is a friend who lives close by.
Reason for the upsize is because of a recent holiday to the Kruger National Park in my E46 touring, we saw game but not enough compared to the SUV's and 4x4's who could see over the tall grass, plus we didn't see any cats as we didn't venture onto dirt roads in the park in fear of getting stuck, there and then my wife and I said the next vehicle will be a SUV. Upon arrival back home I started searching for white X5 E53 facelift 3.0d models but they were too expensive for us to buy cash and tyre prices scared us alot, then I found out that a friend was selling his wife's black X3 and I got hold of him and he said we could borrow it for a few days and see what we think, the X3 sold itself to me in the first day, wife needed another day or two to come round but now loves it! White was the first choice but this black one was way cleaner and way more vehicle for the money than the white X3's I had seen. I did test a X5 and it felt too heavy and cumbersome in comparison to the X3, Im looking for something that still feels attached to the road like a 3series but has good ground clearance and the X3 did that and won my heart, perhaps a X5 at a later stage but not right now. Anyway onto pics.

Start off with a comparison shot next to my wife's favourite car.

At home in the garage.

Dogs have more room in the X3 vs the touring.

10mm/13mm spanner missing.

Horrid E90 steering wheel.

There are a few niggles around the car which I am already attending to, to be expected from a 10year old car and no big deal for me as the X3 shares many parts with E46 parts and those I have plenty of.
Brake fluid needs replacement.

Hood lining shrunk.

Was it too hard to paint that bit or what?

LF Indicator has chromium, RF has orange.

Window is a 2nd hand OEM replacement.

1 carpet missing.

No books :(

Torch still works.

The glove box was rattling, turned out to be 2 loose screws.

Spring action is missing.

Front passenger door card.

Wear and tear.

Future Nav screen position.

Wife isn't a fan of the wood trim.

But is a fan of this cup holder...

RR door trim chipped, also missing screw covers on both rear doors.

Rear seat armrest, these open via a button unlike the E46 touring one, had me stumped for a while until I found the open button.

Rear interior lights needed new bulbs.

One Boot light out.

Not sure what would go into that strange hole.

2lt bottle maybe?

Behind the cover.

Other side has good space for a large amp.

Swapped the 652 for a 668

Even with the bigger battery there is still room for more battery.

Nifty way of holding the boot board up.

No map reading lights?

Fixed!

Rear bumper has some parking lot damage.

Only some curb rash on the left side, right side is clean.

First mod, ugly E90 steering wheel out and beautiful E46 M3 SMG wheel in. Will try get the paddles to work with the steptronic box at a later stage.

Side by side.

M3 wheel is a little smaller in diameter.

Same slip ring.

Looks way better!

...don't you know it...

Gearbox software upgrade, decat, vanos seals and chip are on the cards to bring consumption down. Its not too bad right now at 10.9lt/100km but it can be better, still its not bad for a 1.7ton permanent 4wd auto 3.0lt pertol model...:coolShake:

Got our first puncture yesterday, screw in the back tyre, will be fixed today. Fortunately the tyre pressure warning system let me know about the low pressure, wife loves that feature!

I still need to get the smg slip ring from Marc as it has the 2 extra pins needed for the paddle option.

Marc at Autglen ?

if so, he rocks, been dealing with him for years.

I am pretty shocked at that headlight situation, I wonder what happened there, it was not in our time, and I actually never picked it up.

Yea the back is messy, cause and effect of having a 4 to 7 year old in the car bored, I actually would have loved to valet it for you, but the deal happens so quickly,

But crux, serious congratz on an epic car, do her justice, as I am sure you will.

I am actually going to miss her this weekend, we are going to a music festival, and the X3 would have been epic.

Our last camping trip, stuff all that bullshit, seats down, double matress in... and you sleep in the back of the X3, was super comfy, and you could warm it up before hand, that aint happening in the F10 or the F30...

If you do want to fight the fight for the service books, take it up with Audi Northcliff, as they are the ones that scewed us, and I got tired of fighting, specially after the second hand sales man and the sales manager got fired :(

Good luck with the new car.

Something else to watch out for on the early X3's is the aircon evaporator. They like to spring a pinhole leak which causes you to have to regas the aircon every 6 months or so.

A new evaporator is only around R1800, but you have to strip the entire dash to remove the hvac box into which the evap fits. It is a bear of a job, I did it twice already.

Not the same Marc, we stripped the M3 SMG and a few pieces still at his place.
I put a chromium bulb in already, found a good condition black X3 front passenger carpet already and a 330i airbox top section so as to fit a 330i MAF, that 2.5lt MAF is restricting power.
As for the valet, not bothered as I will enjoy doing it myself. Plus once I had a taste there was no giving it back...:ty:

I wonder what's the first set of new rims that will be put onto her
...well the 18" 108's are the right size and offsets for the current tyres...
But once these tyres are finished I will refurbish to silver my old track wheels style 18 17x7.5J ET 41 so to get more sidewall in the tyre.

Chromium replacement bulb.

Found a replacement carpet @ City Deep Auto spares.

Because the bumpers are unpainted I could add heat with the heat gun to get some original shape back to the corners, also flattened the plastic piece that was sticking up.

Also picked up a 330i airbox top section, also have a brand new 330i MAF but I need the rubber piping still, the smaller 2.5lt MAF and airbox will soon be gone. The front duct was also missing so I found one of those too. You can see I replaced the radiator cap too with a new OEM one.

Still looking for a mirror glass. Small crack.

I had to remove the LR wheel today to fix a puncture, had to summon the powers of greyskull to get the bloody wheel bolts off. I battled to remove them even with a power bar, imagine if I was stuck on the side of the road with the std wheel spanner I wouldn't be able to remove the bolts!

While the wheel is off and the hub looking a little rusty...

Notice the size difference between 3series on left and X3 on right, 120nm vs 140nm torque settings.

Torqued, now 3 wheels to go...

Also just over a month ago Leonard's wife had been involved in a smash and grab, the glass had been replaced but there are little shards falling out the drain hole in the door, when the window gets re-tinted I will vacuum out the remaining glass.
