So far throttle response has increased, turbo lag reduced and the car pulls harder off the line, its early days but the fuel consumption looks better too, using a litre less per 100km town driving.

Its not a restriction, it is designed to stop the swirl of exhaust gasses coming out the turbo. Straight exhaust gasses flow faster out an exhaust than spinning gasses, that's why bmw fitted it in the first place.
Spiraling gas particles flow a longer path than straight.
Longer path against the pipe wall = more friction.
