So Saturday evening my wife I were on our way Monte for a 30th. Driving on Witkoppen we just crossed the Church street intersection (past The Pot Place on the right) going down the dip. I was originally in the left hand lane and then I moved over to the right hand lane to overtake. Now for those who know that piece of road, the oncoming lane starts out as a double lane at the opposite end of the dip and then quickly merges into one lane going down.
So I'm in the right hand lane climbing out of the dip when I notice some idiot in the oncoming lane driving almost half a meter over the solid line into my lane. Naturally I moved slightly left to avoid possible contact with said idiot and flashed lights furiously to warn him to get back into his lane. He had just passed me and before I have time react another car (who must have been even further over into my lane) smacks me on the side.
Needless to say my wife and I soil our pants and I then notice that my side mirror has done a 180 and the housing is pretty much f**ked. At the next intersection I immediately do a U-turn and backtrack to see if this arsehole has even bothered to pull over but to no surprise after driving back more than a KM I find nobody.
When we eventually got to Monte I properly assesed the damage and fortunately there was no panel or body damage. Only a few minor scuff marks (which I easily polished out).
I'm now sitting with this:
I guess I can thank God that it wasn't a lot worse because I keep thinking if I didn't move over to avoid contact with the first vehicle, the second one would have hit me head-on.
My predicament now is, whether to bother going to the Police Dept and opening a case (for an insurance claim) or whether to just have the mirror replaced through BMW out of my own pocket.
I contacted Clearwater BMW and they quoted me R9200 just for the complete mirror unit without painting and labour so I guess I'm easily looking at a price tag of R15k for the entire job.
I guess an insurance claim with a R3K excess is the wise option. :thumbdo:
