Ok, so here is my guide to repalcing the FSU/FSR on a right hand drive 1998 e39.

Step 1: Remove the following panel:

To do that you need to firth remove the screw found here:

After that, just slide the panel towards the back of the car to remove it.

Step 2: Remove the indicated panel by undoing the indicated fasteners. Please note that the two hex drives.

With the 2 panels removed, you will now have access to the cavity where the FSU resides. It is VERY tight in there.

Step 3: Detach the FSU cable, by squeezing the indicated tabs together and wriggling the cable lose

Step 4: THE HARD PART! Remove the FSU by simultaneously pushing down on the indicated tab and pulling on the FSU

Now reverse the process when putting the new one in.

Where did you get the FSU/resistor from bud? And pricing?

And when are you available to do this for me?

Got it from Goldwagen Delarey. I called them and they said they might need to order it, went in to pay deposit, and they had one in stock. It was about R730.

It takes about 10 minutes once you know what to do, so if you want, we can do it any weekend after the 25th.

check your connections first, they lose contact so key to second position and wiggle it a lot,

gizmo replaced mine for me and realized it wasn't actually broken,so i have a spare(for me don't even think about a sale lol)

Photos from my recent holiday. I am sad that I didn't take the time to take photos on the road, but here is the 5er in the hotel parking lot.

This Sunday I participated in the Ithemba Walkathon for breast cancer. After the walk, as we were getting into the 5er I noticed that the rear drivers side door is not unlocking. Even if you try opening it from the insode, the door is not unlocking. I suspect that some fool tried to break in.

I looked on-line for a DIY guide to opening a stuck door, and came across this:

Can anyone confirm that this is the way to do it, or should I look for an alternative method?

Could be a failing actuator. They won't try break in through the back door cos there's no lock on the outside.

I thought they might have tried a slim jim and broken something. The reason I think so, is because even the interior door handle does not work.Surely the door handle physically opens the door and does not trigger an electrical device?

Also, no reaction to the video?

My front passenger door was stuck in a deadlock - faulty actuator. The door would not unlock whether i held up the locking pin, pulled the inside handle or used the remote. I had to break away the airbag cover, then remove the airbag and used a screw driver to pop up the actuator lever and open the door. The aibag cover glued back in and has no visible damage. Not sure if the same applies to the rear doors.

As far as I understand if the lock actuator fails then the door is stuck, point.

I'm really not 100% sure.

Agree on Dylan's diagnosis.
Your biggest pain would be to get the rear door cover off, to get to the actuator, with the door being in a closed position.

Yup. Did some reading. It is possible. Will need to remove rear seats and have patience.

The missus and I were in the cap from the 13th to the 19th. We drove down because Skywise are idiots. Took the opportunity to take some photos.

In the Karoo, possibly the worlds dodgiest pit stop.
