That's a lot of attention to detail. I love the period correct decals in the engine bay as well, a very nice touch!

Mechanically the car was completed and running by the 1st week of October 2014. Still had minor things to sort out at that time, like the interior..
I'm really happy with the engine, It pulls very stong and the 2000E ratio's are very nice.. 1st gear feels like 2nd gear but after that the gears are on top of one another..
The 3.54 ratio diff also works very nice with the low profile 13's..
However...I had to replace the gearbox in December with a spare unit I had in the garage, 2nd gear synchro didn't show up for the party..

The interior took 5 months, had to be done thrice before I was satisfied..
Up until now I have done about 1300km with the car..
It's fun to drive but deep down inside I like my Sport more..

Absolutely stunning, the amount of effort and i can only imagine cost that was put in.....stunning.

With that i think it also takes alot of patience as I can assume that there hiccups along the way and to push through that frustration take a certain kind of person.

Awesome little cars and great to see the restoration of the Mk1. The Mk2 was a car I so wanted when I was at school and still to this day remember the TV add for the car - " its an Escort - a one six double O sport"
They were basic, easy to maintain, not all that fast in today's terms but great fun to drive.

My eldest at 16 mentioned the other day that he would like to get an old Escort and rebuild it to look like these essentially - how co-incidental the thread popped up.

Thanks - really great thread of two legends :clapper:

Love this thread :worshippy::worshippy::worshippy:

But why did you take the NA Cosworth motor out? Was the compression raised on that one, or is it still low for boost application?
Or has that been reserved for another project? (I see another yellow RS2000 hiding in one of the pictures) :mmm:

I agree that the Mk2 drives much better than a Mk1 could ever hope. Its just a better basis to start off with. Much better body rigidity on the Mk2.

Thank you Sash.. It's with the silver car that I really learnt to swear. I don't think I'll take on a build like that again but with that being said, I know now where to go and who to stay clear of..

It's like you say there, it's not fast but it's fun..
I grew up in a Sport, black with silver striping, sunroof, 13" 6J magnesium wheels with "low profile" 185/60R13's.. So that's were it all started for me..
If you are looking at getting one you should get it now, prices have doubled in the last 2 years and it's getting harder to find clean examples as they are getting exported..

I bought the car with no engine, gearbox or diff..
The previous owner kept those parts for his Locost7.
That motor was a 2.4 bottom end, with ported head, wild cams, 50 webers, full drysump, very high CR and made a lot of horses..

I feel safer in the mk2, there's more space between the windscreen and my face than with the mk1..

Warren I'm finding myself continually drawn to this thread to marvel at the work you did on the Mk1. Really fantastic. Please bring this car to Cars in the Park in Pietermaritzburg next year, definite contender for best on show.
