Removed the alternator myself and the regulator.
Got a replacement regulator from Caelex in Pta west. Was under R700

It will ok - I also had bad marking - came out fine....I did Carbon wrap first - but changed the consul to Leather a few years later.TBP88 said:Have gotten car back from Mike Bridge, car seems fine now. 3 of the 4 "angel eye" running lights are fused, so going to need to source that now (#itneverends...)
The wraps do look quite good though, I'm just a bit concerned because my pocking is a bit worse than yours PLV - so a bit concerned that the pocks will be visible through a wrap (if that makes sense?) How think are these wraps? If it's anything below 1mm I'm almost certain the pocking will be visible, and even at 2 or 3 you might be able to see it (it really does look like somebody stabbed at mine with a fork or something)...

So last night I finally got round to removing the old license plate bulbs, one of the housings had a bent clip, but I've bent that back into something resembling the correct shape, so it should fit nice and snugly, the bulbs were both completely shot, got a new pair from goldwagen and they seemed to work fine, removed everything (I cleaned the housings themselves and they're still drying off) and head off to work this AM.
During the last 1-2km of my work drive the car gives an intermittent flashing of ABS, parking break, TC and tyre pressure lights
A quick online search suggests alternator or battery issues - seeing as my battery is relatively new, I suspect it's alternator related having looked briefly online (link - http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=669131)
I'll see whether it still gives the problem on my drive home, but I'll likely have to try to get codes read and see what shoes and then test voltages. :/
Hey man,
Check out my post here: https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=77307&highlight=valeo
I had the same issue - ended up being the regulator, as my voltage was spiking all over the place.
You will need to check if you have the Bosch or Valeo...
Good luck man!
:coolShake:
Had the same thing on mine.
Just test the voltage on the battery terminals while someone revs the engine up to 2000rpm.
In my Z's case, the voltage would spike to 17v and all the lights on the cluster would start flickering.
Good luck finding a genuine Valeo voltage regulator though:smashScreen:.
It shares this part with NO other car. I ended up using a knock-off regulator, because BMW's solution is a R14k complete alternator
Ja, had errors cleared last night, immediately afterwards it started the same issue, now it drives normally, but theres a warning light about the lights (strange).
Seems like a grounding or a voltage regulation issue - anyway, I'll be calling around some CT auto-electricians today and hopefully they can slot me in sometime this week to have it checked out... Any contacts you guys can share? Fordkoppie? Who sorted yours out, and where did you source the part?
Regards

Are you in CPT? any contacts for this? (apologies for the post spam) would just be nice to chat to an auto electrician who has dealt with this before...

After that the car will need a proper deep clean and then I'll be just enjoying and maintaining. The shocks may need doing in the next 2 years as well, in which case I might go for coil-overs, money allowing. And the final thing I've been looking out for is a strut brace, sadly I'd have to import it... Which is prohibitively pricey.
TBP88 said:Hi all
So I haven't posted a few pics up of the car, decided to finally get round to it.
My initial wanted thread (from 9/9/16):
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=76158
The Z4 coupe was a favourite shape of mine from their initial release in 2006 to present day, when my older car faltered I decided to begin the hunt for a new car and this was on the top of the list (I did also test a 135i coupe as well as a 130i).
Anyway, the details of how I landed on this car don't really bare repeating - but they are listed above.
Upon finding the specific car I wanted I began the process of getting work done on it, this was led by Warren (Gizmo), who did the general work on the car and Peter (@AEW) who did the engine work.
That work is detailed here:
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=78521
Plenty of money later I received the car, and drove it from JHB to CT (through torrential rain on some pretty shot tyres!!!). Needless to say I had to baby it home but the car already began to work it's way into my heart.
Upon getting here the first thing on the menu was to register it in Cape Town and get new plates fitted (I now have blisters on my thumbs from getting all that old stuck in double sided tape off!) and some new front tyres fitted, the rears are on their way out too but the car passed it's roadworthy with that pair so for now I'm ok with it - but in the next 3-6 months I'll be on the hunt for some new rears.
In terms of my intent with the car, it's to really keep it as stock as possible, repair some of the remaining items that need work (the CD changer cassette is still missing, the sunglasses holder is broken, I need to replace the rear license lights as they appear to have fused - no warning light to indicate this though?). I gave the steering wheel a little clean with some warm water, a tiny touch of soap and a toothbrush just to get the stitching a bit cleaner, but the top of the steering wheel is a bit knackered (see pic), it'd be nice to know if there's anything I can do to repair that a bit. The rest of the interior is in fair condition, the plastics in the centre console are a bit knackered as is the centre aluminium (the dash aluminium is actually ok). I might trawl the breakers a bit for a new centre aluminium as I presume it's identical between all Z4's that had the aluminium, or I might investigate getting the part wrapped at some point in the future - it is quite badly pocked with bumps from keys and so on and is a bit unsightly. The plastic on the steering wheel is also a bit pocked - Would be cool to see if anyone has any potential links to fixes for all of that too (again, see pic).
Depending on where my life takes me in terms of work I intend on keeping the car for as long as is feasible - my work in CT allows me to almost completely avoid traffic, so the heavy clutch+gearshift is bearable as a daily. The fuel consumption has been in the 11-14l/100km so far on the 4 tanks I've used thusfar.
In terms of potential mods I'd consider - painted calipers to either black or silver, a CSL intake if I one day have 40gs fall into my lap and maybe a new exhaust if another 40gs falls into my lapThe one thing I really do want done is the shorter radio aerial, when I have a chance I'll get that ordered and fetched from BMW and screw it in.
Onto some pics:

(This was as just before I fitted the license plates, did most of the work at an Uncle's place cleaning it as and had to run out to get tape to stick my own plates on!)
TBP88 said:Been an AGE since I've updated here for plans for the car, the previous issue was exactly what was indicated above, the alternator had a minor issue, Mike Bridge sorted it at a reasonable rate and the car was up and running in a matter of days.
Since then I've had some weird issue where the light warning comes on, now the brights and normal lights are not great and I suspect it is the ballast that isn't working 100%
But onto new stuff, as you'll know the interior on my car while not awful was certainly a bit tired, none moreso than the steering wheel. Anyway, even though it wasn't my express instruction to have it done, it has been recovered (work done by Dinesh Auto Trimmers, cost R1500).

The initial job was extremely poor, I got them to redo it and it's come out reasonably well. It certainly isn't 100% perfect, but it's a solid job for the cost I think.
Anyway, pulling back into work and I sighted:

TBP88 said:Thread revival! Haha, yeah, it's bedded in nicely now and is a lot nicer to hold and touch.
Still enjoying it, actually just back from a late night drive now. It remains a special car, the sound and the general driving sensation of rawness and maybe even at touch of violence is just visceral and exciting.
I can't see myself letting it go, any time soon at least.
