My car - Z4M Coupe (silvergrey/2007)

Hi all

So I haven't posted a few pics up of the car, decided to finally get round to it.

My initial wanted thread (from 9/9/16):
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=76158

The Z4 coupe was a favourite shape of mine from their initial release in 2006 to present day, when my older car faltered I decided to begin the hunt for a new car and this was on the top of the list (I did also test a 135i coupe as well as a 130i).

Anyway, the details of how I landed on this car don't really bare repeating - but they are listed above.

Upon finding the specific car I wanted I began the process of getting work done on it, this was led by Warren (Gizmo), who did the general work on the car and Peter (@AEW) who did the engine work.

That work is detailed here:
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=78521

Plenty of money later I received the car, and drove it from JHB to CT (through torrential rain on some pretty shot tyres!!!). Needless to say I had to baby it home but the car already began to work it's way into my heart.

Upon getting here the first thing on the menu was to register it in Cape Town and get new plates fitted (I now have blisters on my thumbs from getting all that old stuck in double sided tape off!) and some new front tyres fitted, the rears are on their way out too but the car passed it's roadworthy with that pair so for now I'm ok with it - but in the next 3-6 months I'll be on the hunt for some new rears.

In terms of my intent with the car, it's to really keep it as stock as possible, repair some of the remaining items that need work (the CD changer cassette is still missing, the sunglasses holder is broken, I need to replace the rear license lights as they appear to have fused - no warning light to indicate this though?). I gave the steering wheel a little clean with some warm water, a tiny touch of soap and a toothbrush just to get the stitching a bit cleaner, but the top of the steering wheel is a bit knackered (see pic), it'd be nice to know if there's anything I can do to repair that a bit. The rest of the interior is in fair condition, the plastics in the centre console are a bit knackered as is the centre aluminium (the dash aluminium is actually ok). I might trawl the breakers a bit for a new centre aluminium as I presume it's identical between all Z4's that had the aluminium, or I might investigate getting the part wrapped at some point in the future - it is quite badly pocked with bumps from keys and so on and is a bit unsightly. The plastic on the steering wheel is also a bit pocked - Would be cool to see if anyone has any potential links to fixes for all of that too (again, see pic).

Depending on where my life takes me in terms of work I intend on keeping the car for as long as is feasible - my work in CT allows me to almost completely avoid traffic, so the heavy clutch+gearshift is bearable as a daily. The fuel consumption has been in the 11-14l/100km so far on the 4 tanks I've used thusfar.

In terms of potential mods I'd consider - painted calipers to either black or silver, a CSL intake if I one day have 40gs fall into my lap and maybe a new exhaust if another 40gs falls into my lap :p The one thing I really do want done is the shorter radio aerial, when I have a chance I'll get that ordered and fetched from BMW and screw it in.

Onto some pics:

(This was as just before I fitted the license plates, did most of the work at an Uncle's place cleaning it as and had to run out to get tape to stick my own plates on!)

Shows some of the little bumps I've picked up, driving back from JHB i got two heavy stone dents on the bonnet, sadly both right on the crease lines that are very visible - hardly earth shattering but certainly not ideal.

Front bumper also will need a respray at some point in the future, not going to hassle with that for now as it's just far too great a mission + expense - but will need doing.

In terms of going forward, I've called around for a CD magazine, Bruce's spares has one for R450+vat (so about 500) which I think I'll likely buy, unless somebody can direct me elsewhere for cheaper. Beyond that I'm hoping to just find a new centre aluminium chunk in better nick than my own and then look into redoing the steering wheel (I think I need a proper expert to look at it and tell me what the best solution would be, a redye or a re-cover).

Another thing, my insured value is R170 000, which is the insurance valuation, this is absurdly low (particularly given the going prices). My car is certainly not a concourse winner, but replacement value is probably at minimum R50 000 more than that. Does anyone know where I can get a valuation done?

Regards!

Hey Thomas

I was amazed at how effective Paintless Dent Removal was on my M3 - i had some dents over body lines and they came out almost perfect, and very affordable. Give this guy a call: Luigi - 083 6798840

With regards to the CD shuttle, if I were you, I would rather fit an AUX cable, OR if you use an iPhone, get one of these:
http://www.incarconnections.co.uk/b...7-series-mini-x3-x5-and-z4-ctabmipod0093.html I used one in my M3 and it was fantastic. I only removed it because i replaced it with the equivalent Bluetooth device.

Insurance is a tough one, but go around and get some written valuations. Take all the invoices with the work you have done to make a strong case for the car.

Crossley & Webb
SMG BMW and a few others
EDIT: You need at least two. The more you have, the stronger your case.

Once you have these, then you can at least start the conversation with insurers, but its almost impossible to get agreed value on a daily driver. It's more achievable on a weekend car which has an annual mileage limit like 8-10k km, but even then only certain insurers will do it. I wasn't able to make any progress when I had my m3, and it was a problem because the insured value was R100k less than market value. It sort of is what it is.

Good luck!

Cheers

I've said on more then one occasion that the Roadster is a better looking car, but that side profile is dirty, just dirty :blowheart:

Great color too :clapper:

Oh, I also wanted to mention that there is a great little place that can do respraying of the plastics - Clives Plastics and bumper repair in Paarden Eiland. Very affordable.

I also went through the whole insurance thing and also want to start a thread about it.
They've insured my car for R160k. And you al know what they are worth. My insurer said that if I can get a written evaluation of my car, then they will make the insured amount more. But 2 BMW agents just said they may not or cannot give a value that is more than what the book gives. And as long as there is a book value, they will not evaluate the car for more.
So yes, I just pray that nothing happens to my pride and joy, because I will loose between R70k and R100k.

Looks like we'd all lose out on insurance claims as our cars are under insured.

This is just one stunning car!!:clapper::clapper::clapper:

With regard to the front bumper , I know places in JHB that will do a solid job for about R2k with a +/- 3 day turn around time.

Just gonna quote this message and reply to all at once :)

So, will investigate paintless dent removal, the bonnet bumps are a bit unsightly (got a pic this am but looking now the pic doesn't show it :/). The front bumper though I'm ok with, I daily drive the car and live in the cbd - lots of steep driveways, lots of speedbumps, realistically the bumper will scrape a bit and no use getting it pristine, then daily driving the car and it's back to square one again - when the car is my weekend warrior I'll likely do that, hence why it's low on the priorities.

I'm ok with a CD shuttle, writing a few songs to my current headunit seems to me that it can't handle variable bit rate MP3's - bit crappy as I mostly have music encoded in that form. Ideally if there's a way to get just USB connection working that'd be great (I'm an android person :/) - but at +-500 for a cd shuttle I'll be holding around 500+ songs in there, and I usually just play FMR anyway.

Side profile of the coupe really is carporn - the sloping roof is just perfect. It makes the rear end seem shorter too, really makes the car seem longer and more lithe - I absolutely love it.

Am loving the car thusfar - went in with open eyes to the negatives of using a car like this on the regular (harsh ride, fuel bill similar in size to US government deficit) but I'm still extremely happy with the car. And when it's clean and the weather is good and the window is down and you get past 4000RPM the sound alone makes the car worth it. :p

Will follow up at luigi and clive about the car - see if I can organize something with those guys about the interior (I've attached a pic below of the steering so you guys have some idea of the extent of wear - and what you reckon it'll need in terms of fixes)

Hi all!!!

Updates, came into some money, so will be calling into Clives over the next few days/weeks. Just changed the aircon microfilter, so aircon is smelling fresh and good now - finally, just in time to miss the entire heatwave in CPT!!! :)

Aircon power is still quite average, but coming from my old Alfa Romeo it's like being transported to the arctic circle in mid-December. Added to that I'm not an aircon person, largely use it to clear windscreen and in severe heat (35+) so mostly it just goes on for a minute or two to cool me off on a long trip before I go back to sitting in the heat.

Checked oil today, literally perfect oil level still, that's after 2.5 months of mixed driving - about 3500km covered since I got the car now and it still puts a foolish grin on my face like no other car :) Added to that, it looks like some further extra dosh MIGHT be coming my way - in which case I'll look into this dent removal thing as well within this year :) Then the car will really be tip top.

Cheers lads!

Hi guys

Seems my number plate bulbs are shot - realOEM just gives a part number - I'm sure I can source a bulb from Midas or the like for 1/3rd of the price, any ideas as to what sort of bulb I'm looking for? Or a place in CT that can sort this out for me quickly and easily?

Thanks and regards

I've had a couple that have blown now. All OEM bulbs replaced by BMW. I have now opted for some LED one's that I have sourced from eBay. I am still waiting for them to arrive. I quite like the brighter/cool white look. I am also hoping that these will last longer... will let you know once they in just FYI.

Although it has been pointed out to me... why make the number plate even MORE visible?... lol
