My car is not well

Hi guys

for the past week or so, my car does not idle smoothly from a cold startup, but wrote it off to the cold weather.

This morning, drive around untill normal temp. Next moment I give it stick through 1,2 and 3 gear. As I come to a hault, the car starts misfiring almost to a point where it want's to die on me. Keep my foot on the brake and keep the revs up. The car idles so rough that my hands are shaking of the vibration through the steering wheel.

Any ways, was close to Menlyn BMW :argh:, had to leave it with them untill they have time to lookat my problem.

Any comments or ideas? They seem to suspect injectors, but at 48k km does not sound right

Symptoms sound similar to when i had injector issues.But that was around the 80k mark.

Rough idle on start up sounds like the high pressure fuel pump issue

Has you car been in HPFP and injector recall? If so suspect its a coil.

buddy of mine had a similar issue, Could also be carbon buildup in the engine if incorrect oil was used, they did a flush and filled new oil. he didnt have any issues since

Thanks guys, BMW just phoned to let me know they can not find anything wrong with the car (diagnostic equipment) :argh:

They will have a go at it again tomorrow, I also think it could be the coils, because the car is a 2010 and should be free of the HPFP failures, also it was serviced 3 months ago.

I don't think it's fuel quality (filters included), but more on the spark side, don't ask why, but I just have a feeling about this one

My wife topped up 1L a month ago, and she could not tell me what oil they used:nonono: It was a semi-synthetic she thinks :fishwack:

It seems the tuned cars run flawlessly...hint :=):

Strange that the car did not throw up codes on the diagnostic check. The HPFP, coils, spark plugs would not cause such a sudden breakdown...there would be prior signs of wear before hand. Injectors and fuel issues will definitely cause immediate issues as you have described.

Hope you get it sorted.

I had my second 335 since 2009 and the only issues i had was the HPFP but it has been knock on wood since the replacement even heavily modded.

Sounds more and more like the injectors.The first time my car went in,they said the same,that diagnostics could not pick up anything.Anyways after a few days they said the car was fine.Picked it up,drove it around the block and the car did the same thing.Took it back again and only then did they figure out that it was the injectors :flyfun:

Just out of interest, did you continue driving on, or did you first shut the engine down and then restart? Sometimes this apparently will sort out a rough idle like this - but the cause still needs to be determined. Another thing to avoid, especially in cold weather, is to start the car from cold and then move it out onto the driveway only to switch it off again for whatever reason - need to get something out of the garage etc. Best is to take it for a drive so that it at least does get up to temperature - our fuels and condensation can cause all kinds of problems from cold starts! Happened to my Wife's car a few weeks ago - she took the car out of the garage and left it for a few hours, then brought it back in, so the car never got up to temperature! Then the next day she gets in and starts up, immediately notices that it is misfiring, but thinks it will clear as she drives on, but it doesn't and seems very down on power - thinking the worst she turns around and comes home to let me take a look. When she started the car it was fine again!

My car has the same symptoms as yours,started last week Wednesday and it only happens during cold startups.Very rough idle,backfiring and missing.Strange that when the car warms up then she's fine and drives normal again.Took the car to a buddy of mine down the road from me for a diagnostic as he works for BMW and he has all the tools.The errors that came up were "DME Error,misfire cylinders 1-5".

I booked the car in on Monday and they still busy with the car.I'm very good friends with the workshop manager and the technician that's working on the car.I suspect its the spark plugs but my buddies insist on playing it safe.Vanos,coilpacks,plugs and some valve that sits in the cylinder head by the camshafts are being replaced.Oh yes they also replaced my radiator as there was a small leak as I needed to to up the car with a liter of water every 2 weeks.Im not complaining,motorplan FTW.

My fuel pump was replaced with the latest one a few months ago.I'll let you know what the outcome is once I get the car back.:thumbs:

Its possible that both your cars needed the recall treatment, which was probably not done by the previous owner.
All the best. But be aware the 135/335 N54/N55 are very temperamental. Try and stick with one type of fuel as well. Engen & BP seem to be consistent fuel pump fuel quality. Anyway, enjoy those beasts.

My gf's 330i did that misfire on cold start up the other morning, its done it 4 or 5 times over the years. Switch the car off and back on and the problem goes away.:dunno:

Similar thing happened to my e36 years back. Turned out to be cracked spark plugs.

Just had a call from BMW, no faults logged, the car has an uneven idle on cold startup, now they ask me what to do as the computer does not tell them what is wrong WTF :argh:

So if I buy the diagnostic software, am I a qualified mechanic :roflol: I wish tax and accounting was that easy :facepalm:

They asked permission (this is funny) to go and test drive the car and see if they can pickup any problem, I gave my permission, they came back and say the car has a misfire, but guess what, the computer is still not logging any fault, so back to square 1 :argh::argh::argh:

Now they want to go and drive the car with the laptop connected while driving to see if any fault codes are registering. My question is simple: Is this what we accept as norm with modern cars, no fault according to the computer = we must be imagining the misfire?:bangdesk::bangdesk::bangdesk::bangdesk::bangdesk:
