My bmw e46 318i does not want to rev past 2000 rpm.

my 318i does not rev up. idle control valve and potensiometer were replaplaced with no results. autoboss only indicated potensiometer fault:argh:

Coil packs...

VVT (though you would normally get an EML warning)

Best route is to send it someone like zaleonard who won't mess u around.

No stress X,

I know all about N42 woes, you can, as a matter of fact, plug OUT the VVT computer, throw it on the floor, and you will still not get any EML.

Touch wood mine has been fine for a long time,

Interesting, when the wife was doing short distances, we had the problem, now she does about 80km a day, and the issue is gone.

The clutch is busy dieing though, but got a kit for like 2k, and me and dad will pop it in this weekend,

Wait a second, the N42 does not have an idle control valve does it, it has DISA.

Bud, what motor have you got in the car, there were 3 differant "318's" in the E46

My E46 318i had the M43 engine, not really related but it had both a ICV as well as the DISA valve. Those DISA units love packing up and they do generate an EML light on the sixes, not sure about the N42 though.
