My Alpine White F25 X3 Xdrive20d Motorsport

Having sold the 320d and purchasing the M3, it was inevitable that a new daily would need to be found for my wife to use.. I had offered up my 330i for use, but un/fortunately she declined this generous offer. We had agreed to look for something later this year, as I had just spent a princely sum on E46 maintenance and on the purchase of the M3. With us working from home until January next year, yet another car wasn't really needed in the current pandemic...

Maybe it was seeing the joy and elation I experienced with the purchase of the M3 that moved up this timeline, that's what I like to tell myself anyway.. I had always liked the F30, but my wife expressed the desire for something with decent ground clearance.. Besides, I already have 2 rather low vehicles and it would make more sense to get a daily that offers some practicality. I also quite like the idea of the higher seating position for her, especially in the climate we find ourselves in. I maintained that it had to be a BMW, due to my unwavering love for the brand, despite the slew of questionable decisions coming out of BMWAG in recent times.. A story for another day, I suppose.

I knew already what I was looking for, it was just a matter of finding the right car. I have always loved the look of the F25, it has a stylishly rugged look, that is quite appealing, especially in Motorsport guise.. I have only owned one exclusive pack BMW and its partly why I sold the car, I kept looking at Msport E90's and thinking how awesome they look, first world problems I know.. Despite the 'inconvenience' brought about by the lower kit and low profile wheels, it had to be a Msport kit, the other essentials were xenon lights and a panoramic sun roof. I had a look at the usual sites over a few weeks and found nothing worth looking into.

I remembered seeing a gem on the forum, in the guise of @"Kyle" s X3 SHOWROOM THREAD.. I showed my wife the showroom thread and she was sold.. Knowing full well that he doesn't hold onto cars for a long while, I took a chance and planted a seed while we were having a chat.. A few days later and this had already taken root, Kyle contacted me to say he was thinking of selling and I should have a look. We met one evening and it was my turn to be sold, the car really presented exceptionally well for an 8 year old vehicle and the 2 owner history + low mileage were the cherries on top. We discussed the details of the deal and I collected the car a few weeks ago. A HUGE thank you to Kyle for everything, including the gearbox service that he graciously agreed to complete as part of the deal.. Appreciate it bru.

Here is the new daily after a quick clean up, a 2012 BMW X3 Xdrive20d Motorsport in Alpine White III with Nevada Black Leather:

My wife is ecstatic with the car and her only request is that I don't make it as loud as the straight-piped 20d. A car she quite enjoyed until I made it a 'boy-racer' (her words and not mine, LOL)! That said, I don't see myself doing many mods to this car, I already have my other cars that enjoy my spending monies. Aside from a DP that I would like to do to relieve pressure on the turbo, a short interval oil service is next on the cards.

Beautiful SAV!!!
love that it’s neither too big or small. Drives like a car too.

Seeing examples likes this is more reason to hang onto mine.

Beautiful, these are pretty much perfect for daily driving under all conditions: plenty of torque, great fuel economy, all wheel drive, comfort, bullet proof engines, well priced...

My wife also enjoys our X3 (F25 2.0d) and automatically claimed it when we sold the Mini (which she bought before we got married). That's the reason I can't change it for something else now lol.

Enjoy and safe travels, bru...

A short update here on life with the X3, which I have since become accustomed to... When I first got the car, I must admit that I found it a tad cumbersome coming from smaller 3 series cars, especially in Umhlanga where parking bays seem to shrink and parallel parking is the order of the day.. Having had the car for a little under 6 months, I must say that my impressions and perceptions of SUV/SAV's have dramatically changed. Found a few pictures of when I went to view the X3, with the 30i.

Previously I never saw the point of them, but that was mostly because I have never lived with one for an extended period of time. Once I had gotten used to the size and maneuverability, I actually found myself reaching for the X3 keys more often. Gone is the sense of dread when driveways are steep or there is no roadside parking or road conditions are less than ideal. Despite the car being a Motorsport model, the ground clearance is ample and the ride is superb, especially considering the 19" wheels and low profile tyres. There is also a sense of 'safety', since the seating position is relatively high and the car is in fact quite sizeable next to other vehicles, which my SO is quite happy about. It appears a bit larger than the F84 X1 and I particularly like the way the design has aged, in relation to newer models.

I can't believe that the car has only seen 3 motor plan oil services in all this time... @"Kyle" had the oil changed at 85k and I wanted to do a short interval oil service on the car (90k), seeing as though it was on the BMW sludge builder service schedule. I had the car booked in at SMG Durban for an oil service and at the same time I asked them for a quote on fitting an air filter which I had purchased with the M3 service items, imagine my surprise at a R300 quote for literally 2 mins of work.. I decided to just do the oil service and come home to fit the air filter myself. The old one was beyond toast, so you can imagine what a difference with the new air filter!

We had our annual road trip planned a week ago and despite all my convincing, the SO decided that the X3 would be the car to do the trip in.. In recent times, I had fantasized about a long distance jaunt in the 30i but with the state of the roads and the number of trucks congesting the highways, the X3 was in hindsight a far better choice. I added in some LM diesel additive and brimmed the tank up, expecting to see around 8l/100km at the end of the journey given the traffic, roadworks and my spirited driving where applicable, but imagine my surprise at the consumption of this 2 ton, 4 wheel drive SAV on both the drive up and down..

Having covered just over 6k in mileage since the acquisition, I personally wouldn't want a garage with no SUV/SAV. The practicality and go anywhere attitude that they offer is something that I have missed in my prior vehicle history. I have a trip planned to Clarens for my wedding anniversary this weekend and guess which car is doing that duty...

Absolutely agree, I also shared your prior sentiments around SUV ownership until I owned one.

Glad she’s treating you well...

Quick update on this thread.. Used the X3 for the Anniversary weekend away in Clarens during December and so glad I decided to use this car instead of the others.. The roads in Clarens itself are appalling!!

What a scenic place though and golden gate national park is probably one of my favourite drives from a scenery perspective.. I even got to play around with the hill descent control on the trip, coming down a steep rocky gradient. Just being sandwiched between mountains, with crisp, clean air, is pretty much food for the soul, if you like nature and being outdoors.

The car pretty much averaged similar consumption to the Jhb trip but as always, a few mandatory pics are in order..

I echo my earlier sentiments about having a garage with a SAV/SUV, these cars are just so versatile and you don't feel bad about poor road conditions or the lack thereof.. I genuinely feel a DP and some SW would make this even more fun.....
