I've always been interested to do this to my car but always worried about the rpm being too high in cruise at 120km/h on the highway, and average fuel consumption commuting at varying rpm's...

Correct. Came of an auto 325i.

Direct fit and no modification of flanges required.

I was also scared that the 3.46 might be too short ratio for a 5 speed especially driving at 120km/h.

Will do a vid showing noise and RPM as soon as I can.

So a few weeks ago this happened.

It would seem the water pump packed up (bearing went) and the fan began to spin around violently. This was the end result.

Then decided to proceed to replace the following -
(1) brand new steel propeller water pump from the agents;
(2) brand new thermostat and thermostat housing from the agents;
(3) brand new belt from the agents; and
(4) brand new aircon belt from the agents.

With everything off this is what greeted me. Notice the copious amounts of sealant used on the thermostat housing port. :RedNo::RedNo::RedNo:

In the process of cleaning

Parts. (the gear shifter-part hasnt been fitted yet).

New pump fitted. Just take note. There are 6 holes on the front of the pump. The two holes in the middle of either side is actually the holes you use to get the old pump off. Simply fit two nuts by alternating when tightening and the old pump should come out.

New thermostat and thermostat housing

Pulley back on

First belt fitted

Second belt fitted

New bolts fitted to plate underneath the car (exactly the same as OEM but only R12.00 for 4 from Nesco).

Everything back on

Just to add.

The Power Steering Pump was also replaced about a month ago.

Also replaced all 4 tyres with Pirelli P1's. 225/40/18 all round. Must say im very impressed with them so far. That coming from someone who is a die hard Bridgestone fan.

Sure I got them from Autoquip Tygervalley (behind Forsdicks BMW) and they were all inclusive R6 800.00 (incl. balancing and alignment).

Both front Wheel Speed Sensors / ABS Sensors and Oil Level Sensor replaced.

Car is currently on 331 000km.

Discs and pads to be replaced soon.

wow, thats quite an innings. a while back i spoke to a BMW mech, who said:

"only a maintained E46 gets to 200,000"

and i thought he was joking, until my car got to 160,000 something.

looking at previous posts of you changing out the waterpump, thermo etc.. just brought back memories for me from beginning of last year. :hammerhead:
