To update this forum I though I would post the follwing,
I Have owned my 1997 for 5 years and am still loving it. (see pics)
I also had a 850CIi 1987 model back in the day, that reluctenly sold because of additions to the family. (not a good family car) ,anyway having owed both models I can say from experience that the 840CI is a very close second. much better gearbox and engine, better fuel consumpition and lighter frount end, very similar power output, especially using the tiptronic gearbox.
The best mod I have made on my car is a halogen headlight upgrade..
The nappa leather on the later models was a good addition.
The earlier 840's were not brought to south africa because the the unleaded fuel was not compatible with the older 840ci engine.
Any current owners that would like to contact me please feel free

Journalists called it a 'German Ferrari' all those years ago! The first models appeared in 1989, so you must have had the 850i later than 1987.

What the Journalists didn't know is that this car was not a sports car, and that its levels of refinement was the finest!

BMW called it a luxury grand tourer! But it came second in Auto und Motorsport's 'sports car' class! A category for sports cars where it didn't even belong! That same year, BMWs three, five and seven series took first position in their categories!

The 8 series! For me, the No.2 magical BMW after the M1 off course!
