Car looking great Sash. :praise:

I just spent some time catching up, since your initial disk change....

I cannot believe the amount of rust accumulated, in such a short period of time. I just changed rear disks, and it will be interesting to see if I experience the same problem.

Thanks for sharing the pricing on the pads and disks, where did you buy them respectively?

Lastly, did you by any chance measure the thickness of the old disk prior to replacing? I would be interested to know how much life was left? My rears were totally shot (@ 145 000km) at just below the recommended minimum, and my fronts are due to be replaced at the next service @ 155 000km.

Thank you,

It was shocking and so disappointing whenever i washed the car and you have a clean wheel, but a rusty disk that looks years old. Glad to say 6 months later it still looks good.

I meant to measure the old disks, but I was lazy. Looking at it though, the fronts had quite a ridge on them ( I'd guess about a 1.5mm), and the rears
were not as bad( under 1mm ) but I was in the mood of replacing it all haha.

Regarding the shops i got the parts from:
Autozone PTA West for the brake pads,
Centurion Midas for the disks.

Received some stuff for the car. I ordered a ebay badge in the interim since I have not been able to meet with Spiro. The badge is not perfect but it will do and at the cost it was a no brainer since i was purchasing other stuff from the supplier and my shipping was not affected.

I finally received the bonnet shocks for the car

Fitting the badge was easy enough, just ensure you use a soft cloth to protect the paint and preferably something plastic to pull the badge off

Much better.

The bonnet shocks was not complicated either, the clip on the outside needs to be moved out of place and it allows you to remove or fit.

Here the clip is moved

Doing the same on the old ones allows you to remove and then fit these and put the clip back into place .

Ebay, cant remember off hand but either China or Taiwan. They work well, the bonnet lifts itself from about 8-10 inches away from the cradle.

The other item on the pic I have been wanting to get the jack pad for ages, it irritates me every time i have to jack the car that i was forced to use the OEM jack and then my trolley jack( car is too low to get under) and find the place for the jack stands.

So hoping the jack pads reduce the time spent doing all the above.

Not too long ago, a parent at the daughter's creche seem to not see a huge boat of an e60 & introduced some character to my car.....

Then there was the scratch I added on the front bumper. I put off doing the front since I don't like to keep sending my cars for paint but when the back needed painting it was too noticeable to leave it.

Then Kuvi at VPS Randburg had the special on painting a bumper. After we made contact we agreed on an amount and time to bring the car in.

While the time took to get completed was alot more than anticipated, it had alot to do with me being pedantic about minor issues.

As with any spray painter the majority of the quality lies with preparation and paint. In my case I initially wasn't happy with the colour match and Kuvi obliged with getting the paint matched at a different colour supplier. I also got to see the colour on the car before the second paint, which allowed me to ensure the paint was spot on or as close as metallic could be.

There were other minor issues but I have to commend Kuvi on how everything was handled.

At this point I asked Kuvi to sort out the PDC which seemed to keep coming loose and ensure it was cleaned and did not have too many layers of paint as the space between the bumper, pdc and pdc surround is less than a millimeter. This was done neatly and fitted properly.

The end result can be seen and I am more than happy with the outcome. Kuvi handled all my queries and issues in the best possible way.

VPS randburg might be new in the spray painting business but customer service and business ethic will see them gain experience in a short period of time.

Being the pedantic person I am, I still detailed the car after and gave constructive criticism to Kuvi on any minor issues that would help the team in the future.

The after pics.....

As part of the detail i went the following route

- Rinse with HP washer
- Car Chem Snow foam to loosen dirt
- Wash using 2 bucket method and Car chem Car Wash Shampoo
- Decontamination using Car pro Iron X
- Further decontamination using clay bar
- Polish using Menzerna 2500 on a Shield DA, using a LC CCS orange pad
- Decided to skip to wax as I was just getting tired and used Softt 99 Fusso dark
- Gave it a couple of days after buffing and then washed the vehicle and applied a second coat.

The video below is the wash after the first coat of wax.

I think its just a case of do it once, get it right, then its much easier after that. The first time that Nikhil was around when we removed the intercooler. I would have just left it in there, but he was adamant, we could figure it out with the help of google lol, and he did.

So when removing everything the intercooler looked like this

Quite a leak if you ask me, so I cleaned by letting it sit filled with degreaser overnight. My worry was that there was a leak worse than just the boost pipe seals. In the morning some of the degreaser leaked out, implying that with no pressure just gravity, it still managed to leak.

The pic below is after it was cleaned, but on the advice of my fellow diesel addicts, I mean fanatics , I sent it for a pressure test.

The bad news is that it is definitely leaking, due to the design of the intercooler it cannot be repaired. I have the following options w which I am still weighing out:

-Buy new oem which is costly 8750 to be exact
-recore current one, but my worry is the quality of the core and the lifetime of that work in terms of welds etc.
-get a custom made cooler with new piping etc, here I don't really want custom, custom always implies a little bit of fiddling, trimming, squeezing and probably lots of swearing. I prefer if it could be oem replacement or upgrade, but with e60, options are few are far between.

Still deciding and checking to see I can source a new Behr intercooler though.

I had the cooler tested by Silverton radiators in pta and it seemed quite convenient that they found it leaking badly and had a re-cored one ready for me.

When I went to pick it up,I asked to see the leak, so they obliged and tested it while i was there again.

The issue is actually poor design by bmw or Behr, on either end the intercooler has a kind of shaft, a hole that you can see through from top to bottom . You can see it in the pic below, the middle green highlighted area.over time the welds or seal on this area starts to give up. I highlighted the areas where I saw bubbles coming out during the test.

Oh and after asking the guy to confirm whether he had a recored one , after telling him that the E60 cooler does NOT fit any other model, it was found that he had another BMW cooler, not an E60 one.
