Motorplan Extension - F30 320D Msport

Hey guys,

I am sure plenty of threads have been started on the forums with the very same title (Sorry!)...but i need advice...

so my pre-owned beauty F30 320D m-sport that I purchased in May is currently at 87 000kms...just came back from a service. so now I am thinking about what happens when I get to 100K kms.
I do about 25 000kms a year, the motorplan is valid in years until august 2018.

SO I'll be out of plan according to kms by April/May 2017 by my calculations (leaving me with another 15 months on the plan in years) which for me to meet I would need to extend by another 33 000kms (give or take) so that by 2018 I can extend by years instead of kms.

I just got a quote from BM and for me to extend the plan by 25 000 kms (which will best case scenario) is going to cost me...wait for it
R41 000... and thats best case...worst case is I need to extend by another 11 000kms after that at R15 500 which will get me to meet the year sof the plan then in august 2018 I can extend by 2 years at a cost of about R5000 a year

I know there are pro's & cons to not extending, but with the diesel I am really more paying for the plan to cover me incase the turbo or vanos, or engine or clutch or anything goes...that's really what I would be paying for, as a minor service from BM is in the region of R8000 & a major service about R15 000. (& thats from BM, I'm sure that I could get a decent BM guy to do them for a third of the price)

I'm aware that there hollard does one & motorhappy does as well, but if I take this will it make my BM plan null & void? so when I get to years will I still be able to extend with B if I go with one of these are not?

while I want to feel covered, R56 000 to get me to August 2018, i feel is a complete ripoff. (I'd much rather buy the Mperformance active sound exhaust system & tune the car) for about half that. but what BM should actually do is if you fit a massive perfomance part it should include some kind of plan extension.

anyway off topic.

your feedback & advice is much appreciated.

thanks

Minor service costs r8k? Who told you that?

Oil service special here on the forum is R980.
My 110k km service on the 330d f30 cost r3400 which included the r850 air filter as well as a brake fluid flush on top of the oil service.
I know there is a risk involved, but r56k is almost as much as a big failure, and the chances are slim.

Shot! The 8k service was what was just put through my motorplan on the service that they just did (which included front brakes).

I have been in your position twice before. First time with my E90 320d and second time with my F25 X3 2.0d.

With the 320d, I extended the MP by 20000km at a cost of R1.27 /km - my scenario was very much the same as yours where I did (and still do) around 35 & 40k km's /year.

I kept the 320d until 135 000km's when I traded it in on the X3 and had not one single issue with the car. Routine services and nothing more.

With the X3, the car is now on 147 000km's and is just 3 yrs old. I didn't extend the MP on this one because BMW quoted me R1.56 per km. I sat down and did some calculations and with the service cost printout from MP I worked out that the service cost for the X3 in the MP period amounted to just R 0.28c /km. Yup 28cents per kilometre. Calculation was simply total service costs as per MP print divided by 100000.

Now (touch wood) so far the car continues to run faultlessly at 147k km. I have the services done as per the service indicator (up until now still at the dealer) and she runs like a dream.

What I have done though is to create a "war chest". I keep a very detailed logbook of travel for SARS and thus claim back my travel allowance which has seen me in some years get back as much as R103k from SARS (following of course the mandatory audit :RedNo:). This money is invested and I view it as "car money" because basically its rebate from my travel allowance. (forced savings in a way cos I am clearly paying too much tax upfront )

So my suggestion would be forget the MP extension. If you have the R41k in cash available, stick it into a "war chest" and add 50c a kilometre to that fund. If you never have a problem, you've got a nice amount of cash saved up and if you have a major blowup (which is unlikely if you look after the car and don't drive it like you stole it) then at least you have the cash on hand to fix it without feeling like you just got dryboned by a whale

I just got a quote from BMW to extend my 2012 F30 328i for another year. The quote is R13k which is pretty good imo:=):

From what I have learnt from other posters before, extending on a time basis is much cheaper than on a mileage basis, hence the reason yours is quite cheap.

Extending KMs does not make sense, rather use the money as a deposit on a newer model. My 2c :coolShake:

Partial thread hijack..

Just been told I have to pay R1300.00 to have the M/Plan on the 320d I bought from my accountant transferred into my name. :RedNo::RedNo:

R1300.00 for a 30sec edit of details on a computer!!! W T F !!!

Yup, standard procedure, which I think is NONSENSE. I've fought BMW on this and I gave up, probably can only win this in court.

A motorplan is like a warranty, and there should be no reason for ANY inspection as the car must be fixed by them, ANYWAYS. This PISSES me off to know end! :RedNo:

Auto Alipina charged me R2600 (I didn't know it was less) and when I hounded them about the rip off, they said it's because they include their ridiculous R1300 alignment.

Back on topic though... My 120d is on 93xxx and motorplan ends 30 Jan 2017.

R18000 to extend... Told them, no thanks. Time extension is OK, add miles and it becomes crazy.

If you have the money, put it in a fixed deposit account or your bond. I bet you now, you'll never need it.

thanks guys.
I am not going to extend I'll put cash aside every month for a war chest from which I can also draw to pay for services as & when needed (& hopefully as @pimpassdaddy says I will hopefully never need it).
Maybe once I have a little over & above the war chest I'll deffo look at that sweet sweet active sound system, and the day it goes off plan, it will be tuned to bring down that consumption even more.

@Wideopn-X3, it is absolutely shocking i am a firm believer that they are raqueteering in plain daylight. they just smash you every opportunity they can.

thanks all for the advice, it is much appreciated.

I'm thinking of doing the same.
Looking at getting a preowned 320i, that's just come off of motor plan. I might extend the warranty for a little, but otherwise I'm also just going to have a "car fund".. provided nothing major happens, it will probably save in the long run.

Side note, once the car hits 80 000km you are then unable to extend time only. You can only extend mileage. So your scenario of extending time, come 2018, is not possible as you will be well over the 100 000km/5 year initial motorplan offering.
