More power from M54B22

Hi!

Has anyone had any success/experience with getting some more power out of the E46 320i? I am considering doing a De-Cat, fitting some branches and a dual 50ml freeflow system with 2 boxes and maybe a high flow induction system.

I have heard that you can put the intake manifold from the E36 328i onto the M54B22 engine. Is this true, anyone actually done it? What king of improvements did you get?

The car pulls well and sounds great, it just lacks some bottom end grunt. Obviously upgrading to a 330i would be best, but thats not an option for now.

Thanks!

Dont bother with the full system on teh 320i, I know, I have been down this road before. Just get the cats cut out and thats that.

Its a 320i, get used to it, the best thing you can do is to take care of it and remember that it is not and will never be a massively powerful engine. Do some suspension mods like I did on my 320i, then at least you can go quicker around corners :)

FR you probably know a bit more seeing as you owned a 320i ive heard you can buy 320i race cars in Europe... is this true? if it is it might be worth looking at what has been done to them...

im guessing the cost of doing the mods wont be worth it, but i find it interesting that they would build a 320i race car and not a 325i or a 330i...

Different classes ;) look at the old 318is race cars.

Lets say all this is gonna cost you about R8500. If your happy to spend it then id say go for it. If you are not expecting huge gains but just a bit more grunt, a better exhaust note and your happy with that then why not. I know people are gonna tell you to rather leave it and rather spend it on something else but do what makes you happy.

The intake from the e36 is not gonna work without modifying the entire intake terminal.

Also keep in mind that when doing all these mods you need to chip the car. Thats another R2800.

i guessed it was something like that... the engine should be pretty near perfect on the car thou so it would definitely be worth a look...

Not worth the the money you will spend...if you want a faster car, get one. Not sure how much difference an E36 328i manifold is going to make considering that it was designed to be restrictive. At the end of the day, its a 2.2l 6 cylinder, not much power to find in there i'm afraid, so take the plunge and get a E46 330i

Thanks Diablo Jnr. Quite a jump from a Kia to a 130i, nice!

BMW is good at getting a lot out of their engines, so it is doubtful that you would get that much more power output with mods, maybe improve the power/torque characteristics and "noise", but that's about it. My Wife's got the same car and it is really an awesome car as it is!!

I'll show you how to get more power with your 320i.

This is what I did:

Before:
bmw320i.jpg

Steps to increase power:
1) advertise car on forum
2) sell car
3) buy 328i
4) POWER!!!

After:
bmw328i.jpg

:)

That was mainly from the grey --> yellow conversion, I could have gained an extra 25nm if I went with red, but I dont prefer red.

awesome conversion.

That grey to yellow yeilds some awesome figures there.

I wonder if I do a (titanium) silver to a (phoenix) gold conversion how much extra power I would gain.

:bangdesk: at work today

Get hold of De@nO he has a 320i with Decat & 328i headers.. pulls a bit better than stock.. and has a better exhaust tone.. He has gone through a few different exhaust set ups... even a full FF but now settled on the E36 328i headers, center cat replaced with a resonator box and standard rear section.. as it give a nice noise & does not sound crazy loud
