Modding is a mugs game

Since I've joined the forum all I've read about was modding to make your car faster.... Faster than what, well that's another story.
I'm guilty to an extent , as I have an m perform exhaust. That was my first mod and was sold to me as a part which won't gain any more power . Just a more lively sound.
I then added a R5k 2nd stage induction kit and truthfully, apart for more grunt , the M is so powerful that I can't feel the extra 5/8 it may over.

I know it's different with FI cars cos they can be hypnotised to think differently.

So,and try to be specific with your answer " what makes you want to mod your car"

Fame?
Great discussion around the fireplace?
My wonker is bigger than yours?
To show how deep your pockets are?
Just plain old show off?
The ability to show how fast your car is from one traffic light to another?

The ability to go faster than you previously could, it is the basis of being a petrol head

I just drove an F10 535d for the day, going back to my E46 328i felt a bit unusual. It feels like it's not pulling as well as it was, maybe the 535d brainwashed me. Now I want to mod my car just to make it peppier, will never be as fast as the 5 ofcourse, but i just want it to be faster.

It's an interesting question and I suspect everyone will have their own reason or theory. my theory would just be culture in terms of taste.

The same would the apply for the car you buy. why would you then spend 100, 200, 300k on a BMW can when you can buy a fiat uno for R25 000.

All people that mod their cars have the same thing in common, a love for cars and Motorsport. So if you look at in in a psychology sense, then it is all about the feeling your car brings you. the joy from feeling the performance or having a massive sound system or having a nice exhaust.

personally I prefer performance. Brings a smile to my face every time I plant my foot and I feel boost. and for me that's all that matters.

just my 5c :fencelook:

I just like reading about mods now ,2 years ago I bought the wife a corsa lite to learn to drive . After a month it started tires needed replacing so on went 17"s @R7000, After a couple of months the engine went so why replace it with a 1.3 when a 2.0 GSI engine can fit so in it went ,R24000 later with lots of new parts

Meantime the wife was still learning to drive and I was driving this car. More and more ... Until one day happened to have a run against a golf 5 gti in town. Over a couple of hundred meters and I was right with him all the time. , but after that day the wife would not sit in the car anymore .!this cars unsafe you are going to kill us :blab:
A month later it was swapped for a 1.1 fiat seicento now she is happy
:nonono:
I'm done modding it still makes me sick to the stomach when I see pictures of it and think of the sound of that 57mm powerflow exhaust on that car

Two weeks after I swapped it at the garage it was on the front page of our local newspaper showing a picture of the car in the back of a truck and the driver on the floor getting treated by paramedics
I'm done on major mods. Now

I am a modder by heart...my house is in constant modifcation...always changing, adding stuff...the car is just an extension of my need to "individualise" things. Just a crazy but lekker part of me that keeps me from being too serious about life.

I said to the wife a few years back, I'd like to own something really powerful.i only thought up to e46 then and right until Feb this year decided the V8 was going to mark a milestone in my life ... M division turned 40 in may this year and so did I ..... It was a no brainier .

When I used to be a Durban boy, I was always in a hurry , tailgating , changing lanes and wanting to always be at the front of the line .then having a dice down west st, smith St and doing the Quarry rd thing seems a bit daft for me.

Always wanting to show off a bit I guess.

I guess I live in an environment now where people are not easily impressed and there's no one you can show off to.Also, you get your ass kicked If you try your tricks and jeopardise innocent lives.

And before the question is asked.... Yes, I do track the car on track days and its great.
So,,,, it's all for me me me

I agree with you Jerez. Its fulfilling our own personal need; its not really about what others think about us or our cars.

We lucky that we have this forum where we can share our personal induldences. :joy:

I may drive a Smart but to me modding it is not about being different, to an extent this just happens in any case, for me modding is about making MY car a reflection of ME as an INDIVIDUAL.

The Pearl white paint, black rims, the sound install and small touches are things which give me pleasure from my car, a standard car to me almost lacks soul and personality, through modding you have the ability to change a car and its always great to get stuck in and stand back later giving yourself a pat on the back.

because it looks good. asthetically functional.

for exactly the same reason I "mod" my kitchen with cool lighting, refinish our old furniture, hell the same reason my GF likes to buy shoes that live in a cupboard.

modding for speed, meh, not to sure about that, to me seems like a mines bigger than yours 90% of the time

This all sounds sensible and I wish the M was cheaper to mod.
We'll see in the new year hey.... A few motorshows lined up for next year..... We'll see hey.

Well said!

Although all Jerez' reasons he mentioned are real, the deep pockets and the show off part, and then the faster than you part comes to mind. The sad part i found put was that most of these laaities driving these tuned VW's and GTi's dont know a thing ir two on how the parts work or why its there in the 1st place..sad.
