Water is the absolute worst liquid to keep in your car's cooling system. In an emergency, yes and limited top ups are okay, but never only use water. Its corrosive to all the internals and wears it out, causing your problems to worsen. Always look out for anti-freeze with anti corrosive qualities as these tend to keep the hot...and cheap...plastics and rubber compounds they use these days well lubricated and flexible. It also helps lubricate the internals of the pump and the thermostat.

And with that said, safest is to stick to the OEM anti-freeze!
