Seasons Greeting gentlemen,

So apparently the W204 models have timing chain problems after clocking 100 000km. Mine is on 103k km and it started a rattle noise on start up and I was told without hesitation that it's a timing chain & chain tensioner. Has anyone experienced such a problem and any cheaper place to replace it. Agent wants R27k only for parts. Assistance is highly appreciated.

It is a well documented problem on the M271 motor. Problems usually start from about 80 000km.
If you catch it in time you only need to replace the chain, tensioner and guides. If it however progress to a point where the timing gears get damaged, things start to get expensive. Couple of years ago I was quoted R19k for those gears by MB. You do however get aftermarket gears, but I cannot comment on the quality.
Chain, tensioner and guides only was about R3k excl labor when I did it.

Problem blown waaaayyy out of proportion - only a small number of engine experienced total failure. The problem starts with the chain stretching causing the intake and exhaust sprockets to become damaged. Eventually after plenty warning (noise on startup) the chain skips teeth and the car stops.

Its uncommon to bend valves but its not unheard of. Ive bought and sold a few of these and some had over 250,000 with the original chain and sprockets.

Like the BMW's it seems to fallen victim to internet chat forums where people work themselves up into a panic when in fact the failure rate is rather low

As mentioned by other fanatics, you can get sprockets, guides and chain in most good spares shops for a total of around R8k (this includes locally manufactured sprockets which are harder than the originals) - straight forward job not requiring any special tools - only decision is to feed chain through and crimp or to buy continuous chain and remove front cover to replace

Thanks gentlemen, fortunately the problem was caught early. Will hear what the workshop says. Just hope my extended warranty(Motorite) pays everything IN FULL.

change the cam gears one time . the teeth on the gears wear down causing slack in the chain and thats how it slips.. I know first hand with my ex c200k .

ive done that to my wifes car , mb quoted 45k , i eventually fitted a second hand set which i picked up for 10k and the chain from mb was like 1.5k. and that was 12 yrs ago.

the car was on exactly 120 00km when it happened, now its on 250 000 and it needs replacement again , the quote i received now is from merc centre for 14k all inclusive which im probably going to do as that is the only problem this car has other than that its a solid built car ....
