Hi Guys
Has there been any research that indicates what the max power increase stock x35i internals can handle before they go poof.

Just curious.

From what I have read oaks are pushing up to 650hp on stock internals with only a Turbo Upgrade, intercooler and minors. Not sure what it would take to start hurting the internals. Very interesting Question though.

I’m not talking from experience but from the little that I know it would have to do with a lot of factors. One being charge temps, the lower the temp the less likely you are to experience detonation which means higher boost can be run. Two will be fuel quality ,higher octane = more power. So I would imagine that the internals could handle 800hp if the right conditions are met or the engine could explode at 400hp if the wrong conditions are met. Maybe I’m looking to deep into the subject matter. I’m sure one of the regular techies can explain.

would also depend on how compromised your stock internals already are :dunno:

how long is a piece of string?

I think the main problem is heat control on this engine not the strength of the internals...

I stand to be corrected but there was a long debate on e90post about the earlier build n54's having forged internals and later builds not having the same.. some research there might yield a definitive answer...

heatsoak and high ambient temps are the Achilles heel of these cars...

There are very few documented cases of broken motors on the N54. the ones that have broken range in power from 380whp to 450whp. Some stronger ones that have undergone major abuse didn't break. The N54 is one of the popular self tuned motor with JBs, proceeds, OFTs etc so circumstances of tune could have added to breakages as well as the previous limitations of fuel and ignition controls of the piggy backs.
Bottom line is the motors can handle major abuse and the DME is trick in saving the motor so assuming all was perfect and a secondary system failure didnt occur I would be comfortable in throwing 650whp and 850nm at it all day long.
