Maintenance for Jeff's M5

Hey guys,

So it's time I start seriously paying attention to the M5, I have a list of things I need to do, but need some input from you guys, I've probably missed some things. Bearing in mind that the M5 is tuned. Cam, ECU, exchaust, headers and intake are modified.

  • Oil change and new oil filter
  • ECU re-tune
  • Replace both fuel senders
  • Sort out passenger seat twist
  • Sort out passenger side mirror motor
  • Drivers side back window
  • Bonnet & small paint touch-ups
  • Spark plugs
  • Diff oil

The car has just clocked over 180 000 km's. Anything else I need to pay attention to? I've already had a pressure test done, changed breaks, replaced ATF & break fluid.
Any suggestions/ tips on what I can DIY?

Jeff, no advice from me...but damn your car is good looking. It makes you stop in your tracks for another look.

I also have to say with all the performance mods on the car you behave very civil with the car when ever we meet. I have never seen you trying to show off...unlike us x35 drivers

I've seen Jeff show off just a little, and that car moves. Mind you, I was showing off just a little too. Change diff oil too, and use the correct oils.

Thanks Twinz, appreciated! I also can't stop looking at her!
Haha, damn x35 drivers - can't take 'em anywhere ;) Really though, there's a time and place to be silly. When I hit the track everyone's invited and that's when I'll open her up.

Don't get me wrong, it's happened a few times - but in 10 min bursts and then it's chilled again. Petrol is expensive :biglol:

ecu retune? why what you worried about...

Just want to make sure that the ECU is still what it was the day it got tuned. I have noticed a little dip in performance since I bought her - and have no idea when last the ECU was checked out.

I think I'll write up a TLGP tomorrow if I'm feeling creative, but that was fun!
Thanks dude, will have a look at the diff too.

Reminds me, we need to get together soon! Drop me a PM when you available.

I also had a similar M5 until a year ago, had it fir 12 months, got it for a good price and spent a bit on it to make it prestine.

The car hed done 107000km's when I got it. The front suspension bushes were "pap", I replaced all the control arm bushes, upper and lower, the car's handling was sharp again and it was going straight as an arrow at high speed. These cars are a bit heavy and accept it, you don't drive the V8 for good fuel consumption. You accelerate and brake harder and that puts extra strain on the suspension components. If the disc are not very good, replace them sommer as well together with new pads.

Enjoy the M5, it's a great drifter if it's manual, in wet and dry:thumbs:

Best M5 of all time!!!!

Jeff i just wanted to add, ur car is effin hot mate!!! :inlove: but besides that i dont have any other advice for u :p

Me too - no advice but just need to compliment the car - it's damn awesome and also think it's the best looking M5

Will never forget the ad of this car...the one where a landspeed record is being tried out with a side camera angle view of the drag car, and when they stop, a black M5 (like Jeff's) has the camera mounted to the side of the car... epic!

Found the ad

I don’t know of any part in the world that had an Auto e39 M5. :fishwack:

These were still PROPER M cars and not even the lazy Americans could have done anything at that stage to convince ///M Gmbh to fit the devil's gearbox (read auto/SMG/DCT)

@ Jeff - Yeah, we must make a plan, will call you sometime, promise.

@ Fordkoppie - To the best of my knowledge, you are right, no auto E39 M5's were ever made, they were all six speed manuals.

Added diff oil and spark plugs to the list.
Topped up oil yesterday, grabbing some more this weekend - probably :) Getting a whole load of quotes from parts today.... not sure if I'm looking forward to getting it though :fencelook:

just my 2c......and i asked the question ...with apparantly very well informed peeps....and was told that diff and gearbox oil should not have to be changed and should last a life time due to the quality ( and price ) of the stuff......

i wanted to do mine.......they said NOT....

just asking.........

2000 E39 M5 with 134k's on the clock

opinions guys.....

@ George M - In my opinion, and from seeing others suffer gearbox and diff failure, this "filled for life" talk is BMW speak for "buy a new box or diff from us when they fail". And that's a load of crap. Any oil eventually loses it's viscosity, and needs to be replaced. If the "intended" lifespan of a car is ten years, and cars last much longer than that, then that oil must be replaced at latest when the car reaches that age. I change engine oil once a year, and box and diff oil every few years, and am a firm believer that regular fluid changes of all kinds keep your car healthy for a very long time. BTW, an E39 M5 diff replacement is somewhere in the region of R40k.

@ Sith,
Thanks bud, going to get it done, the car is nearly 12 years old, so yes i agree and would rather pay a few k for oils than forty k for a new diff.

Thanks...
