I have a spare one for you. I bought it to use temporarily when I was waiting for the repair kit to arrive for mine. I will have to confirm the condition, but last time I checked it worked as it should. I would however recommend getting a repair kit for it as the crank lever is a bit worn. Last time I checked, agents wanted R4.5k for a new unit. Drop me a PM if interested.

What is the purpose of it and when do u know it needs replacing:sorry:
As far as I know, it's not something that really needs replacing. The weak point on the unit is the flap and crank lever which is made of plastic and gets brittle over time, shatters and gets sucked into your engine from the intake manifold along with the metal pin that holds the flap in place which can result in bent/damaged valves. The fix is to import a repair kit containing a metal flap, crank lever and a bolt which goes right through the flap from the bottom so there is no chance of it shattering and getting sucked into your engine. I have not seen these kits locally, hence you have to import it from eBay.
The unit for the M54B30 is different in size to the M54B25 so they are not interchangeable.
Also over time, the plastic crank lever gets worn and doesn't allow the valve to open and close as it should. This doesn't affect driveability, but does have an impact on performance to some extent.
