So, in all my BMW's I have owned, I have never owned an M54, which I think is shocking as its regarded as BMW's best motor ever.

I will be getting one on Monday in the form of a M54B25 for the wifey.

Now what I do when I buy cars for the wife, is I include a budget up front to just replace anything wear/tear squeek rattle or moan
Car is a 2004 X3 with 117k on the clock.

In terms of service I will be doing the following regardless
1xPollen Filter
1xOil change
1xCoolant flush
4xPlug change
1x Drive belt
1xBrake fluid change (will get CBF to do this one for me)
1xAir filter
1xExpansion tank
1xTransfer Case Service (will outsource this one)
4xPads and possibly discs.
1xAircon regall/re-oil (will get guys to do this one for me)
1xNew wiper blades (durablades even)

Car had motorplan which expired in 2009 due to time at 75,000, I have no proof that the car had its 100 or 115 service, I was told that it did, but ya right.

What else should I consider doing.

Its an auto, so pondering if I should do a fluid flush on the box and on the diff, but told at 117k I am wasting my money.

Car does need some cosmetic work, but I will take care of that in a couple of months when I can actually get an appointment at my own Dent Doctor.

And before I get the pic comment, you can have it on monday.

Any other up front obessive compulsive things that I should consder

I would strongly suggest 2 more plugs...sorry just had to:rollsmile:

I would change the fuel filter as well. Bet you that it has never been replaced.

i did my belts and pulleys recently, one tensioner was making a noise so i just replaced all of them. You might want to pickup a vanos seal kit from moranor and do that too. oh and check control arm bushes.

I reckon these are easily the best range of motors that BMW made!!

ll good, just surely not durablades!?! Rather the OEM type or I am sure you can get those Bosch Aero Twin blades for this - I really cannot believe that durablades are still on the market!! :nonono:

I would change the water pump while you do the other cooling stuff...
Vanso Seals are a must for an auto

Sounds like my 20k budget is not going to be enough.

Thanks for the advice guys,

All good,

I think I should get the car, strip, and assess from there.

if the pulleys aren't making any noises just yet then maybe just check the condition of the belts. but if you do the expansion tank then seriously consider doing the water pump as well. the stock pump has a plastic impeller where as you can get good quality replacement from goldwagen with a metal impeller for about 300 bux

At that age, you might as well spend another R300 and replace the radiator inlet temp sensor, it is almost guaranteed to be sweating coolant by now.

Good idea to service the transfer case, if it bombs out it will cost you R25k to replace.

Budget for some Plastidip as well for the steering wheel and window switches.

+1 for the replacing the Vanos seals.

Transfer case is shot.

I bought the car with the stuffed transfer case, and I was quite glad about it.

I could instantly take the cost of the transfer case rebuild off the purchase price, have it rebuilt now, and know that its good.

I am however HIGHLY pissed off, was supposed to pick the car up at 5 today, went home early to pick up my dad, he is a partner at Dent Doctor, so he cleared his schedule.

Get home 3:30, about to leave, get a call...

No contract today, only tomorrow, wife is now moody cause she lost her car this weekened already, dad is pissed cause he has a busy day tomorrow, I have commitments with clients...

Bad form Audi Center Northcliff, or they will blame it on MFC, either which way... Bad form.
