M5 Possible things to look out for

Hello

Im new to the site, and see there are small posts all over on my question in the subject line, but nothing really definitive and when searching in the M Fanatics folder it wont let me search F10 M5 (too few characters).

Ive recently purchased a white 2015 M5 F10 with 53000km. waited a while to find one with the 27deg cameras like my outgoing X6 4.0D had.

The plan expires on the M5 in August next year, where I will buy an additional year for about R18k quoted by BMW in Pinetown. I have also taken an unlimited warranty to kick in when the BMW plans finish.

Currently in the plan this vehicle had the gearbox replaced at 14000km, the turbo lines replaced, the seals in the diff (15 day wait from Germany as this is being resolved now after I sent it in to have a confirmation second once over) and replacement engines, and turbo seals.

My question in more detail is - as I see in the USA, EU and AUZ, there seem to be problems with these vehicles - however BMW here says they don't experience these issues and there are no recalls, however in the overseas blogs the recall is mentioned as a possible problem so BMW has altered various servicing requirements to combat this. eg - to try achieve the fuel saving in the vehicle the battery is compromised and needs to be replaced at every service and in some countries the service is now performed every 10 000km.

Has anyone experienced any unusual activity from BMW or can the group here mention possible faults to look out for. I mean as in the example of the turbo's, how poor is the build quality of the turbo that they need new rubber seals every 50 000km or so?

For interest I do own a tuning company as a hobby so I do understand vehicle componentry for my part and have had a few tuned vehicles like my X6 and my wife's X3 Msport 3.0D, previous Coupe A5 Quattro (this used excessive oil and had to have an VW software upgrade and different pistons done as a recall), Amarok TSI, G5 GTI DSG with 438hp T#T$ etc upgrade. I didn't touch my F30 320D cos of plan. Some of the issues ive seen with this vehicle, they seem to be odd, but are not an issue until you go out of plan and the cost is for ourselves. Lets be honest, the dealers milk the cost of the products in comparison to OEM costs in eBay etc.

Thanks Guys your guidance / assistance on frequency of problems will be helpful.

Regards

Apart from turbo coolant lines, I have not heard of or experienced these issues. There were issues with 2012 oil pumps off the first batch for the year which was rectified.

Turbo coolant lines I've had replaced. Turbos themselves are not a common problem. Please link to where you have been seeing these as frequent or worrisome issues? Bimmerpost/M5post I don't remember seeing anything like this before.

Gearbox replaced at 14000km? Maybe a defect, however, motor replaced on your car? More than once? (You mention motors - so at what mileages?) - car was in all likelihood very modded IMHO. These are not common - this isn't anything like the E60.

Diff they normally replace the whole unit as a swap out if there are issues (the couple of guys I know who have had this done). Which dealer are you using?

My battery just lasted me 5 years and again I don't know of anyone with a 5 or 6 (and I'm on quite a few groups) that have had to replace battery at every service... so that makes no sense. Quick edit here: I drive with my stop/start off all the time (I can't stand it!)

Wheel bearings and clicking noise from the front (they re-grease the hub) are the only other really common thing that goes wrong (and then past 75000km)

I sent some of the info to the service guy at BMW. Some of those treads are below:

The turbo seals thing was also told to be by the service advisor, and most aren't made aware its done.

With regards to the engine replacement - my error in something, I wrote two points in one discussion, where what it should have read was, the 2013 blue M5 I was supposed to buy with 78000km had two engine replacements, one of which is currently been performed.

Its Pinetown BMW, but as mentioned i only take delivery tomorrow, although i move to Salk Rock at the end of the year so will go to the BMW in Ballito.

The start stop i did the same thing with my F30 or when I use my wife's F25 X3. A link or two above that i added explain the battery thing.

Strangely enough then, apart from the blue M5 i almost bought, and a few odds and ends the M%'s in RSA don't seem to be as problematic as overseas, however, more people may respond.

Thanks for the feedback

Very nice!
Although the steering wheel is not correct, should be the face lift wheel.

Well spotted. It is the wrong wheel for a 2015 model.

EDIT: Actually wrong grilles, headlights, wrong idrive knob and wrong CID as well. OP is this a 2013?

On the turbo seals point, that would be a fairly difficult thing to get away doing without telling the client since the units would have to be removed, PUMA case etc etc. Is he not referring to a gasket or something else as a seal?

Our cars are also less problematic since we don't have the same emissions control requirements as other markets (generally not just M5s) and if you look at pictures of US cars for instance, our operating temp looks to be lower as well... heard of cars in some markets running hotter to meet emissions numbers.

Thanks for the links, looked through some but M5post seems to be down

If you have issues with DCT feeling odd to you or doing funny things, get them to reset your adaptations (Just try to do this when you won't be driving in traffic so it adapts to your needs).
