:thumbdo: Hi People

I need help. E39 M5

I was racing some Renault Turbo thing a couple of days ago, and when I got home, well the thing happened. I fu..ed up my engine. As I stop at the electric gate, I was misfiring like there was no tomorrow with lots of smoke. There is a slapping noise inside the block, with lots of smoke at the back. I think I burnt a valve, but which ever way I definitely have a bend conrod, the way it sounds too me.

So now, is there someone out there that can overhaul this engine. Secondly, I would like too make it stronger. Can this be done.

Thirdly, plus minus how much am I in for.:argh:

Contact Lysis@axis to get an estimate. Be prepared for some serious expense if what you say is true. Like almost what your car cost kind of expensive. This is if you want the job done right first time.

If you can better describe the engine noise one may be able to guess as to the damage.
A burnt valve is highly unlikely to make noise as such.
A conrod bearing failure is more in keeping with the type of noise you describe.

Please do not start the car again as you may cause a lot more damage.

If rod failure your better option may well be a motor from Japan we have an advertiser on the forum who sells them.

I guess you are in for a R100k if you have a rod failure which has damaged the crankshaft.
M motors are horribly expensive with their parts.

I hope your diagnosis is wrong.

I am very familiar with trucks, but not with BMW engines.

I can also hope that it is a crank bearing, but with all the smoke that came out the exhaust, I think we are looking at a piston, conrod or head related issue. The slapping noise with my experience in trucks, is either a bend conrod or valve that burned and a piece fell in. In trucks though, because of the all the torque, the conrod will come off and hit against the block until there is a hole. I don't think it is the case here. I think it's a bend conrod knocking the sleef entry.

I hope I am wrong.

yes a lot of smoke could indicate a broken piston oil ring or a broken piston
could have dropped a valve and broken the piston

What I am about to tell you saddens me :(

The S62 had a known fault on the main bearings whereby they would deteriorate, BMW actually released a new main bearing set of a different material.

So, chances are, that your bearings disintegrated, or you suffered from poor oil feed due to a failed/fallen off oil pump, which pretty much means, your up poo street without a panel

I have also heard of S62 snapping cranks because of this.

But usually when things go this wrong, you kinda tend to end up with new inspection holes in the block that was not there before.

+1 on everything Alex said.
1. Do NOT start it

2. Let Alex strip the motor, and give you an estimate, maybe if you broke a rod, you can get away with some engineering and only replacing the critical part.

3. Alex is your man to use on this, he spent some time with me yesterday and has a masters knowledge of mechanical engineering, and I trust him completely.

4. Start phoning around for recon engines.

5. You can also look for running cars in a complete state, and perhaps buy the complete car, swap out the motor, have the wear bits replaced by Alex, and sell off the balance of the car. Either which way, your in for 80 to 120k, if you have a car left to sell afterwards (gearboxes, diff's, suspension, interior is actually worth something)

6. If your block and heads are NOT damaged, then now is the time for some serious mods, rods/pistons ect.

But the sad part is, your life is going to suck for the next little while, sorry bud, I know how it feels, I have just been through this :(

I have a 2001 carbon black M5 which i need to get rid of urgently...the engine is excellent at 167000km. Never abused. Big ends redone by RG motors. Any test welcome. Bring your M5 mechanic. Will sell for R100000 Neg . A Must see. Can be donor car. needs TLC
