M4 COMP tyre life

hey guys,

question for the M3/M4 drivers, how long do your tyres last and what type do you use?

I Just bought a set of Michelin pilot super sports and my old rears did not last that long. I do drive quite spirited quite often...so that may be a factor

To make your tyres last longer, you need to change that username to... IWannaGoSlow.

What do you consider as not long?

I had Pilot Sport 4S’s fitted in 08/18 and have since done 55’300km on them and they still have a bit of life left although I have noticed the rears becoming more “slippery” lately.

Driving style is spirited and I have completed A full Michelin Cup with them And the odd track day so around 4 large track days 6 small track days and 3 skid pan events.

I also have BM3 loaded and drive with the CS+ for daily.

*Edit: The Bridgestones that I had on the car when I bought it lasted only around 20k km after buying the car. I’m not sure how long they were on the car before I bought it, but I recall them looking fairly new.

Interesting, my pilot super sports lasted roughly 18000km. Will check out the pilot sport 4s

Are you Hooning it? How often do you drive with TC of or in MDM mode?

I drive spiritedly and have done track days but I am a rather smooth driver and conscious not to light up the rears.

Also, what do you confided as finished? The loss of grip or down to wear markers?

My experience has been similar. I have gotten between 32000 and 38000km on a set of Pilot Super Sports (the 4S should actually last longer) on the M5 - I've had several sets now on 19s and 20s. I have had fronts last more than 50000km.  Unless it's raining, the car is in MDM so it does allow some slip. Granted quite a lot of the miles are on the highway. The M4 surely can't be harder on tyres than an M5 with the extra weight and power? Either way, you won't find a tyre with that performance that lasts any longer IMHO. I can't imagine how you would finish a set in 18000km in a lighter, less powerful car unless running very aggressive alignment, with track use and driving very aggressively.

I thought I would get less than half that mileage out of the Pilot Sport Cup 2s... not quite time to change them yet so I would say they've exceeded my expectations on that front. I probably going to have a tough call to make between a set of 4S when it happens (which I will end up changing because of years at this point) vs. matching the mileage over 3 years to the 'depletion' of the Sport Cup 2.

Of the tyres I've tried (granted not on an M4), you can go for more dry grip at a higher price but then get far less mileage (with Toyos or Sport Cup 2s). Alternatives around the same price will not be as good performance or longevity wise vs. the Pilot Sport 4S (eg: P Zeros which are junk by comparison). Most of the time you can get such good deals on them that you may as well not bother looking at very slightly cheaper options.

Thanks for the input, I think the alignment was off for a while.
The wear was very uneven.

I do hoon the car quite a bit but not constantly and I rarely use full TC off.
Now I wonder who the 1st owner was.

Ok if wearing was not even then alignment could be off. I’ll take a photo of my rear’s and measurements tomorrow if you want to compare the % wear across the contact patch.

I have a set off Cup 2’s sitting in my garage just waiting for the PS4S’s to be depleted.

I must admit though that I went wider in the rear than stock so that might play a role as well. I’m currently running 295’s. It does add a little bit of understeer though as the rear stays more planted.

Alignment or camber? In my experience , the camber is set a bit too aggressive and this causes only the inside of the tyre to wear out .

So this is what I managed to take for you. I only did the rears as I assumed that those were the tyres you have noticed weared out first. I can do the same for the fronts if you wish?

I tried to take a camera angle that shows the wear indicators. direct angle of the tyres makes them look completely shot. These are on the edge of their life and I will be fitting my Cup 2 tyres soon.

@"boost3d": I assumed he meant camber when he said alignment and said it was wearing uneven.

As you can see, they will wear uneven to a degree due to Camber, but it should not be excessive.

Yeah. Then the camber is off. I'll take a picture tomorrow but the wear is slightly more uneven

Have a few mm on the outside but into the indicator on the inside

I usually ask the technician setting up my car, to not set the camber to its most aggressive value as this affect wear for everyday driving. Makes more sense to me to do this and pay a couple hundred bucks to redo the alignment if a "track day" had to come up.
