Where did it all start?

After 10 years for going around in circles, I have decided finally, how I wanted to build out my M3. This document is the journey I have taken with my beloved E46 M3 since I brought her home from the dealers in 2002. I hope you enjoy the thread as much as I have enjoyed owning the car.

*All of the car images are of my car and some of the parts images I had to pull from the internet as I did not take images of the parts or I lost them over the years.*

Purchase History and Day 1

I started looking in September 2002 at 330ci’s, as I wanted a sports car to have for weekend drives. I had never owned a BMW or even a sports car for that matter. My car ownership experience at the time I started looking at BMW’s had only been Ford Bronco’s, so I was definitely a fish out of water. After some research, I changed my mind and ordered a M3 as it had the SMG system. I asked the dealer to order a silver one and let me know when it arrived.

About two weeks later, the dealer called me and said they had a customer back out of an order and asked if I was interested. At first, I was hesitant because I wanted silver but they gave me a discount on the several of the ordered options. I agreed to to purchase this car as I was saving money and the color was not bad. I am glad they did, as now the Steel Gray Metallic is, is one of the rarer colors for the M3 now. October 15th 2002 I bought my M3 with 88 miles on the clock and the journey began.

Vehicle Specifications:
2002 BMW E46 M3
Build Date: XX/2002
SMG II
Steal Gray Metallic.
Black Nappa Leather
Premium Package
Bi-Xenon Headlights
CD Player
19inch wheels
Harmon Kardon Sound
BMW Car Cover
BMW M3 Floor Mats

I am please to finally post that we now have a working flap motor. Thanks to the efforts of Terraphantm and Cyberkaa we can prove that it is possible to make a none CSL into a CSL.

This includes, Temp Sensor, Map Sensor with rail, and now the flap motor.

One of the local photographers asked me and a few other to do a photo shoot last month. He runs Dare To Be Different Photography and based on the following images he sent me I think they are pretty darn good. I will have parts updates coming in the next few weeks so stay tuned =)

I saw a thread from APEX about needing a E46 to test a set of wheels. So I pinged them and they wanted me to bring my car down. My car was to be a genie pig to test a new setup they offer. What they wanted to test is to see if a square 285 setup would work. Well as from the crap cell phone pics below, it does work LOL. APEX guys were a hoot to hang out with and I am looking forward to buying a set of wheels from them in the near future. Not sure when but they will have a write up and official photos at some point of my visit there. Also meet a few M3 members in the AM and one had a clean Laguna Seca Blue =)

Teaser image of what just arrived today. Since it seems people are only interested in this build thread when I spend money LOL. I have a few more updates later this week.

Morning Update:

After last year’s Bimmerfest I meat one of the BMW magazine publishers who was there doing a story on that days festivities. I started talking to the representative there about doing an article on my car to share all the work done. After emails, one very cool photo shoot and almost a year the article comes out.

I would have not posted the article for a few months but there is one major issue with it, which was kind of a serious let down. Wait all this time and when it arrives you are like WOOHHOOO.. oh mannn that sucks.

I will give you a hint, the issue is on the first page. There also is a technical issue, on the last page. I will let you guys see if you can see them.

Looks very well done.

You are also doing a M3 GTR road car at the moment if I am not mistaken? Edit: Not mistaken saw that you posted that build this side as well.

HAHA thanks guys. I would have posted the long version here but the site does not allow spaced between names. Only stop doing that recently. Not going to edit 10 years of history LOL.

I will post other updates here. Trying to build street credit on the other BMW forums around the world.

Great Cars! :praise:

But why do you built a CSL fake partly only? (e.g. Seats..)

The rear seat delete is based on the concept CSL. That had no rear seats and a shelf with a cargo net. I have yet to add the cargo net.

As for the front seats I actually don't like the feel of the OE CSL one. I was able to sit in them on a trip to the UK where I was able to meet some real CSL owners. The seats don't sit low enough for me so I went with Recaro so I could get them lower.

I have to try the CSL seats at the lowest setting but at the notch above the lowest my head was holding up the roof.

You must be a giant, because it always felt to me like i couldn't see out the windsreen with my previous CSL being seated so low.

But I agree that the OEM seats are horribly uncomfortable

I am 6'5 and 20 stone if my math conversion is right. Most cars I do not fit in saddly =(

So wasn't the reduced headroom with the initial sunroof configuration a problem?

Yes the sunroof was a issue. I drove the car with my head slightly leaning to the right. Hit a bump and WHACK head on roof.

My initial reason to do the carbon roof was not to save weight but to fit in the darn car LOL. Never said I modified with the normal logic in mind
