People such as VAC etc buy their bearings from BMW and then proceed to treat them with various coatings.

If one of the main issues is indeed clearance and VAC is coating OEM bearings, is this not making the clearances smaller and thus more problematic?

From what I read on the american forums, this is definitely the case. This is why most opt for the oem bearings as I did as well. It's better for the cheap bearings to take the beating than the crank (from stronger bearings).

The new bearings do not have lead in their construction.
As to the clearance I am not sure whether a bigger clearance will really aid in their longevity as the car I replaced bearings on was at maximum clearance which in itself proves that clearances alone provided they are within manufacturers specs are not the main driving cause for the failures.

From all that I have read and discussed with people it appears (not a statement of fact but rather theory and speculation) that a major contributing factor is the width of the bearing which in the case of these engines it is too narrow by the standards that engineers use.

When replacing the bearings does the engine have to come out or can it be done from underneath

Best way to understand your car is to take it to Gert @ OBDWorx, let him pull data from the ECU and you will get a picture on how the car was treated

I honestly believe you can get information until you are blue in the face but it won't tell you if bearings need replacing. my car was treated like a queen by both me and the previous owner, and as you have seen the bearings were toast. Whereas a friend of mine has an e92 with 117k on the clock, and has no idea of previous history. He just says a prayer before he fires her up (he is doing bearings next week)

There is no escaping the fact, if you want peace of mind, do the bearings.

Agreed with al the above. I would just like to find out IF he did it before I spend all the money for no reason.

^^^ How far is the car out of MP. Cause I can almost promise you that the bearings weren't done under MP, unless explicitly stated so.

Rod bearing replacement is not the kind of job BMW would typically do on Motorplan. What is more likely is that if the bearings go while the car is under plan, then BMW would replace the engine. It's also not really the thing that most owners would do out of plan, Becuase most people are not aware of the risk. So unless you buy from an informed enthusiast, assume they have not been done.

I doubt these will be changed under plan (unless you've got some good contacts :roflol: ) so my advice is, get them done soon!

Would you rather spend 20k odd now or 200k later? :tiptoe:

I'd go the less stressful NOW route

Basically if you gonna keep the car book the 1st of June 2017 in your diary as bearing change day. If it runs bearings before then, BMW will replace your motor, but if it doesn't and you get to the 1st of June, you going to be worried every time you take your car for a drive out of m/plan.
