M140i making screeching noise

Hi everyone,

My car has been making an incredibly jarring noise under load—it almost sounds like a screech. I've attached a video with sound for reference. Has anyone experienced a similar issue or know what might be causing this?

For some context, the sound started about two months ago. I’ve taken the car to a local BMW specialist three times, but we’re still struggling to pinpoint the issue.

Initially, we inspected the turbo. The turbo showed no play or visible issues. At that point, the noise wasn’t too bad, so the mechanic suggested I continue driving until it got worse to make diagnosing easier.

As expected, the noise became significantly worse over time. I brought the car back, thinking the problem would now be easier to identify. We performed a smoke test and found a leak in part of the air duct. Since the required parts weren’t immediately available, I had to wait for them to be ordered.

After replacing the air duct, however, the sound is still present. There is no power loss, and the car drives fine. The noise happens mostly under load. There are no error codes either.

I’m out of ideas at this point. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hard to hear from the video, but do you have a blow off valve on there?
Sounds a lot like a faulty or leaking blow off valve...

I would suggest a different workshop/mechanic as I cannot fathom why he would suggest that you carry on driving until the noise gets worse. Clearly something is not happy.

Sounds like it only happens on boost so I would get it looked at asap.

The B58 Gen 1 and 2 has no Divertor/BOV, it only came back on the Gen 3.

+1 on this
